I'm not trying to bed my m14 into a synthetic stock. All i'm doing is filling in the channels on the top and trying to even it all out so the top of my refinished stock doesnt have all these uneven wierd usgi channels. Ok so I understand the heel or horseshoe of the receiver must contact the fiberglass stock. Mine just barely does. The receiver lugz dont sit all the way in there slots. But I figure that gives me something to work with if I clean a little material out (so they may sit a little lower). I know about the 1.5 inch space after the heel. So I'm guessing after that I can get as close to the receiver as I can, and as straight? Also the inside rails that fit down inside the stock(right in front of lugz) dont come in contact with the stock. Is this normal? From the looks of it ,really, it seems the whole receiver is floating lol. Where could it be seating?. But when trigger group is installed everything works fine. I know this is allot of question but I figure no harm in askin lol. Oh and I almost forgot. What and where exactly are the 5 degree edges on the stock we're suppose to keep?. Just dont like half ass jobs. Wanna do er up proper ;)
If anyone can share this knowledge I would greatly appreciate it. thanks guys

Did you download the 2004 Abbotsford Clinic videos from the stickies at the top of this MBR Forum? You will see me do the demonstrations on 2 of Rooster33's M1A's....

Yah, that gap before the horseshoe 'tang' of the receiver is normal. I hardly ever bed the sides, the area in FRONT of the rear sight... that area does not contact the stock, just the rear of the horseshoe receiver 'tang' is bedded.

Now, only bed this barreled action if you are competing, otherwise if you are hunting and casually blasting inside 200m, then leave things unbedded, trust me , removing the barreled receiver from the stock is a PITA when it's bedded already and each disassembly process further abrades the rear of the receiver mortice contact / support points. Therefore you defeat the entire purpose of the bedding.

I ONLY remove my bedded actions ONCE a year, around Nov-Dec of the season. So are you sure you want to do this?

Now another solution is what I call a casual bedding or a skim bedding just to give a little bit of 'snug' ness to the entire fit of the barreled receiver, this does not require an extensive removal of supporting fiberglass stock material.

Hope this helps.....

Peace be to journey,

Barney

You can also SKIM bed with shims at the contact points at the sides of a G.I. fiberglass. I have both an epoxy bedded and a tin sheet bedded G.I. fibreglass stock - surprise surprise - both shoot the same - but both have good heel contact --

Ok I understand. Im not bedding anyway, just filling the top in then sanding straight and even(remembering the gap). BUT where do you take material out IF the heel is not contacting the receiver. Mine just just barely does. Want her to sit snug. thanx

Are you saying that with the rifle action in the stock.... and the trigger installed and locked in..... that you still have a gap at the heel ?
here's some pics of a usgi stock after i have done a basic refit to accept the norc action ( selector filled and profiled, connector pin area filled and profiled, I also build up the area in front of the mag well and contour for clearance of the oprod and spring.... this is done to stiffen and strengthen the stock at it's weakest point. None of this constitutes bedding but allows for a nice snug fit for the norc. The area requiring a 10 degree bevel sloping down and away from the action, is the area in front of that gap you see in the stock. The second picture of these 3 shows that area ... hope this helps

The one he made me fits like a glove!

It's a thing of beauty really :)

AHHH 10 deg from back to front. Glad I waited for help. thankyou!!!!!!!!!!!

???

Remove the action and look at the underside of the right hand rail. You will see it is not flat underneath, but angles. The stock needs to follow that angle to allow the receiver to sit flat and solid. So the stock slopes down along the side.

Ya I realize now. Im building it up a bit on both edges because when the action and trigger group are installed there are some gaps that I just want to even out. I should be able to keep the original angle by carefully sanding it down to near original but with gaps filled and so on. The heel just barely sits but thats ok i guess. I 'll be careful to leave the gap and keep the 10 degree angle. fingers crossed

The round rear edge of the heel should have good contact. That is, 'the horseshoe'. A side to side air gap is OK in front of there for an inch of two.
