Hi.

Quick question. The Op rod guide on my m14 moves ever so slightly back n forth. How do you tighten these things?

thanks.

2 ways can tighten these but one way can cause internal barrel damage and the other requires a lathe and a knurling tool.

1.The first way is to use a prick punch and punch 2 parallel lines all the way around the barrel where the guide sits to raise the metal, then refit the guide with red loctite. But, if not done correctly, you may cause bumps inside the bore if punched too hard, or even flake some of the lining, both of which could be felt with a tight fitting patch which would mean bullets becoming deformed on their way by.

2.The second way is to mount the barrel in a lathe and the knurl the barrel where the guide sits then fit the guide with red loctite.

You can use a multitude of epoxys like JB weld, Devcon etc..... but unless you raise the metal where the guide sits, it will eventually come loose again. I've even seen a spot welded (with an arc welder :rey2 ) op-rod guide come loose.

Green loctite. Then I use double roll pins. One inside the other. Sorry just used the last one on my latest shorty so don't have the sizes handy. Picked them up from work eons ago.

Try a brand new, non chinese pin. I think Hungry(AKA Tactical Teacher) will send you one for free, just pay shipping. Tightened mine up nicely!

A quality oprod guide will improve your accuraccy and solve your problem, i recommend a Black Arrow op rod guide... JP.

I thought this required the Blackfeather stock, if not it would be a sweet upgrade! Will it work in standard stocks?

Yes, i did upgraded my 3 Socoms ( grandkids rifles) and cut the groups size by half, the original oprod guide is really dangerously cheap... JP.

So it does work in standard stocks? Or did your grand kids all get Blackfeather stocks, either way, I wish you were my grandpa! Do you need another grandkid? =)

What Caramel is referring to is the Black Arrow oprod SPRING guide. The blackfeather does indeed have it's own oprod guide which won't work with any other stock. My oprod guide was loose when I got it, removed the roll pin, peened the oprod guide boss all around with a centre punch, red loctite, reinstalled the oprod guide with a hammer, made sure it was alligned properly (see tilt test) and replaced the roll pin. It's now nice and tight, and cost me nothing.

P.S. The advice given about replacing the oprod spring guide is sound. Tightened my groups up nicely. The key to tuning this rifle is to ensure that the rifle behaves the same way every time the trigger is pulled, springs coming to rest in the same position, bolt with the same resistance placed on it, etc. The oprod spring guide upgrade (blackarrow, Springfield NM or otherwise) takes the slop out of the spring. I have heard that the Springfield NM oprod spring guide doesn't work with Norc springs.

Here is one option we have available for conventional M14/M1A stocks (very limited quantity). It is $119.95 + shipping (not available on our web site). The "NORG" which stands for New Op Rod Guide, is 4140 steel, nitrided, and ships with a stainless coiled spring spin (side screws not included). This is the only oprod guide in the world of this type and I have made and finished only 6 units. Do you need this part? Maybe not. But it is one of the best aftermarket oprod guides for your M14 rifle. Made in Canada. PS - this article may help too.
