Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone knows if there is any way to get muzzlebrakes for the m14 up here? I'd love to get my hands on the smiths enterprises one bu i doubt that's going to be happening anytime soon with the border sealed up...

On the other hand, has anyone made their own brake? I'm a machinist myself and have the means to make them but I'm not realy sure as to what design and materials to use to get the job done right. If I do make one, it's going to be for the metric thread so that I dont have to chop my barrell and it will have a dovetail for the front sight. If anyone has the knowledge on how to design one of these guys let me know. The biggest concern is what kind of steel to use, I'm sure almost anything will do though as long as it can be hardened a bit...

If anyone has Ideas, let me know and I can get to work.

Cheers

Tactical ordinance has some Smith vortex compensators. Don't know the price tho. I made an almost exact copy of the Smith Navy coast gaurd brakes for both my M305 and my Lmt AR (without the dovetail as I put on the Navy gas lock front sight which Marstar currently has in stock) I parkerized both of them over my campstove in the garage and the color came out a perfect match. All totalled they took about 1 1/2 hours each to make.

By the way I chopped my barrel and re threaded it 1/2 28tpi. I also used 4140 It doesnt need to be hardened further. For the .308 cal I went to 9mm on the bore. I believe the formula calls for about .040 clearance. Since you were talking about the SEI stuff you realise they are Imperial not metric. They are very easy to make and the chop job was easy to do if you're a machinist. You would have to order the tap tho (Local Industrial suplies can get them) or if it's just for you you can make it any thread you like.
Cheers

Springfield armory makes a brake that fits on just like your M14 flashhider and all you would need to do is use your old Metric castle nut .
Look for them on gunbroker, they usually sell for around $50 .
Some folks get demilled M14 flashiders and weld the break on the end of them and you get the bayonet lug also . I have a friend that had this done by a machinist and welded the last 4" of a BM59 muzzle break that Reese surplus sells for $29 . It looks really nice and according to him it works well also !

thanks

You'll have to pardon my ignorance, but im not familiar with ATR.

Thanks Dogzilla for the info. I'm thinking that I might give it a go and make a metric threaded one for my rifle, I have a metric geared lathe at home so it will not be a problem. If all else fails and the flash hider doesnt come off then I'll try and get the SEI brake.

Either way, I'll let you guys know how I fare. Thanks for the info.

Any medium hard steel will do. 4140 is very tough and the same hardness as most gun barrels and will work fine. If you got a metric lathe it's easy. I use my Bridgeport to index and mill out the slots and drill concentric holes. I'm thinking of designing some slip-on [use the same castle nut] like the SEI with bayonet lugs for the Norc M14, but then again I don't think the demand will ever be there to tool it up for market. They're easy to make.

I think the thread is M15 x 0.75, but you'll need to check it. There are no standard taps for it, only custom made and that will run over $100 easily. To save that make a slip-on instead like the SEI if you want to keep the original barrel length. I think that's why the SEI is so popular. You could always internal thread on your lathe if you're good at it, but I prefer to use taps with small holes. ;)

If your flash hider is welded on, you'll see where they welded it. Just use your drill press and slowly drill out the weld carefully and tap it off.

you can still export muzzle brakes from the u.s. brownells carries the M1A versions and the AR versions for the 1/2 x 28 tpi chopped barrel mods just need to have bored out to .30 cal. Flash suppressors are now apparently restricted for export from the u.s.

http://albertatacticalrifle.com/ Just talk to numnutz, Rick’s helper. :D

thanks

I'll try taking the flash hider off later this week and decide at that point in which direction to proceed. Might just get the barrell chopped and threaded at Gunco here in Ottawa, and talk to ATR about the brake unless I can get it from Brownells as an M1A part.

Thanks for all the help.

You can get it from Brownells if your willing to go through the import/export regulations and wait a few months. The SEI Navy Brake won't do you any good if you get the barrel chopped. It's setup for original US or Chinese muzzle. You use your castle nut to install it, but you still need to get the old flash hider off first. If you chop it then get the SEI AR-15 brake and open it to .30 cal specs and thread the barrel for 1/2 x 28 as suggested before.

didn't know that

Thanks for the heads up on the thread, I'll definateky have to be careful taking the FH off then! Hopefully I'm lucky and it's an easy one.
