I shot the "after" test today. Rifle has been bedded, a match spring guide installed (needed a new spring - Norc was too small in diameter) and a gas block shim. Simple stuff taught at Hungry's M14 Clinic.

The ammo is what is left over from the "before" test. No load development yet. I shot some military ball (147gr RG) some RG Mexican Match with a Sierra 155 Match King. The powder charge was not noted, but I usually drop the charge by 2 gr when making this type of MM. I also shot some plinker ammo i make with CBC brass and reclaimed CBC powder and Russian 147gr FMJ bullets.

The fact that the RG groups are round tells me that the rifle is shooting well.

I also tried some match ammo using Russian Berdan cases, and 168 Sierra MatchKings loaded with Varget and some Speer 125TNT HP bullets loaded with H335. Both shot well, and in each case the lighter load did best. I look forward to repeating this shoot with 0.5 gr and 1.0gr less powder.

These groups were shot at 100 yards. I used an aperture front sight and a black round 8" bull for an aiming mark.

This is the rifle I will shoot in the Vintage shoot at Winona on Sunday.

Nice work and sweet groups. I have to say I am surprised at the performance of the lighter bullets. After my reults with 145s, and the improvement with 150s, I was fixated on 150+. Seems there is room to experiment with the lightweights.
Thanks for the time and effort mate :)

Cheers.

I have had excellent results with the Sierra 125 in 308 target rifles. My kids used to use them when they were too small for full power ammo.

The recoil with this load was much milder than the 150 and 168gr loads. Some Americans use them for the 200 yd Rapid match.

Shoots the same as my M14 without the bedding and upgrades with standard Federal ammo give or take an inch lol

I would like to see an honest before and after range result post with a stock Norc M14 and then another couple of groups same distance same ammo with the same rifle after all the "upgrade voodoo" tricks.

I'm starting to think there is very little difference unless your calipers are adjusted for thousands of an inch :D

"I'm starting to think there is very little difference "

Depends on the rifle. Mine has been tweaked and shoots as about as good as my friend's rifle, which is box-stock.

Mine is better after the tweaking. Nice repeatable round groups. His needs nothing.

I find the batch of 2009 polytech rifles shoots best out of box , i have 2 of them , they both shoot better groups with norinco bulk ammo then the ones posted by the op .. i have owned 10 different chinese M14 rifles in the last 10 years and those two were the most accurate , i think it comes down to barrel quality . also i find the barrels in these rifles dont start shooting as good as they can till after about a 500 round break in , most chrome lined barrels need a very good break in .
