M14 Scope mount photos

Mounting Scope Base on M14

I just bought an M305 from a CGNer with an ARMS #18 mount and I've been told that this has worked great.

I remember the same problem I had back in the early 80's when I bought my 1st Mini14 in Stainless Steel. There just wasn't a decent scope mount available. I took it to Kesselring Guns in Washington, US and they drilled and tapped a hole in the front of the receiver (above the chamber) and installed a rail type base. I put a 3X9 Leopold scope on it and I never had a problem with it. I took that rifle everywhere, for years! After all the bumping around, rough handling, etc, I never had any problem at all. Maybe the same solution could be done on the M14/M305?

Any gunsmith care to comment?

I am also on the waiting list for a LRB Arms M25 receiver (6 month waiting list) see: http://www.lrbarms.com/receivers.html
which provides the ultimate M14/M1A scope mounting solution.

However, replacing the receiver is expensive, US$1,069.00. I hope a gunsmith can respond to the solution above.

Not a gunsmith, just a regular guy thinking out loud.

The receiver ring (and the flat under the rear sight base too) could be drilled and tapped, the problem will then be - what rings would you use? Nothing is a consistent height like a tubular bolt action receiver. The clip guide is the obvious rear "hanging" point, and someone speculated that Springfield was using a spacer on some very long threaded barrels, like a Remington Model 700 recoil lug, for one of their fancy scope models.

No matter which you choose, there will be some creative steel work involved.

Thanks for your advice to the group and based on your excellent information I called Smith Ent. and bought a #2006 mount with see thru 1913 rail.

Hey Guys.

I've been getting several questions about scope mounts these days, I've tried to pass on what I know from my experiences. First I would recommend anyone read the sticky at the top of the page......skip the first part.....as the second part is just the updated version.

I took some pictures a little while ago....I don't know why I didn't put the old and new style Arms mounts in there???

So here is what some of these mounts look like.

Here are various angles of 4 different mounts, 3 Smith and 1 McCann mount.

Here is what you are looking at, L - R, Top to bottom.

1 - SMith Acog mount, I recommend for anyone using a Sage stock or anyone that wants a little more eye relief on there rifle, as this will allow you to bring your scope back about 1.5 inches. You can also unbolt the rail to allow direct mounting of an Acog. No stacking tolerances there (Sparrow)

1 - McCann mount. These were only around for a few years, heavy steel construction with rinky-dink bolt on weaver rails, they were rated very well ...for a time. One of these days I'll put a better rail on it. This mount is quite similar to the SA Gen 3 but requires you to drill thru the mounted block to fit your own receiver (stipper clip mount) I have never used it.....it's just part of the oddities I have collected over the years.

1 - Regular Smith #2006 mount with see thru 1913 rail

1 - Smith #2024 mount with see thru Weaver rail

Over the years I have used these mounts in this order

SA Gen 3 (sold it, it worked well....with a little loctite (blue) but it's very high)

Arms #18 (Old open style, will never sell it, still my favourite because it is so low)

Arms #18 New style.....jamming issues.....sold it.

Smith #2006 Another keeper!!!! The only better in my mind would be the Sadlak Titanium....but I'm sure someone will comment on the heating properties of the Ti being mounted to an 8620 receiver

Smith #2005 Acog once again a keeper but iron sights are now useless....not that I ever use them

Smith #2024 Weaver OK so I haven't used it....but except for the different rail and the stamping on the side.....I can't tell the difference.

So you guys......don't buy the crap mounts....IMHO the #2024 mount is the best bang for the $ right now. Smith said they were going to stop making them....but.....I've heard of more batches being made. Get one while you can !!

So there you go my $ .02

GG&FB.......Out !

Lee Emerson (aka Different) has published an examination and discussion of many scope mounts at www imageseek.com/m1a/ . Many of the problems, tolerances and peculiarities of the wide variety of models are discussed. Of interest is what he writes about the differences between USGI makers and their adherence to drawing variances, and how this effects each after-market scope mount. The Chinese models are discussed within the text, but all CGNers know their rifles vary between import batches. So, there is no single best base for a Norinco, and trial and error unfortunately is required.

What is this Smith web site that thoust worships? :D
I just ordered one of Marstars M-14s and I'm considering a scope. I just don't want to get stuck with a sh!t mount that won't hold zero to save your life. I went down THAT crappy road with an Sks.

Smith mount 2024

After much reading and articals I decided to go with this one. There one of the best (so I've heard) and it was the cheapest I could find too...

EOTech 4X magnifier in a FTS mount in front of an EOTech XR308 on a TROY MCS.
I have not had a chance to try it out yet, but it is very clear.

Anyone have any thoughts/comments on the B-Square mount?

I'd attach a photo, but I don't have a scope yet. Just the mount on the rifle.

If you're talking about the old aluminum single point B-Square mount, then I wouln't waste my money on it. It's the least desirable mount you could pick. I used it back in the 80's when nothing else was around on my CA M14. It kinda worked, but would not hold hold zero for long. I'm using an ARMS18 mount now and love it.

Here a pic of the rifle, scope and B-Square mount:

Aimpoint Micro T-1 on a SAGE EBR... the UltiMAK M14 optic rail would be ideal with a traditional stock.
