M14 tune up for noobs

Hey folks, I've been reading through the stickies and never realized there were so many ways to improve this platform. I bought this rifle back in August because of how hyped up it was, when I pulled it out the box I immediatly wanted to sell it, I thought it was a hideous Chinese knockoff. I figured I'd give it the benefit of the doubt and put 100 rounds down the pipe before I tried to sell it and guess what, I think it's awesome :D I like it so much that I put a scope mount and bipod from Fabsports on my Christmas wish list and it looks like my girlfriend found it and called it in to Santa.

Here's what I've gathered that needs doing from this forum so far:

Stabilize the shakey OP rod.

STOP putting 180g bullets down the pipe. I've put 100 rounds of this so far and I'm not sure if there's any irreversable damage done. I'm going to get some Sierra 168grain HPBT MATCH bullets for hunting / target shooting. 500 for $189.99 at WSS.

Put little welds on the gas system so it doesn't shake around while shooting.

Complain about wobbly turning bolt.

Concern myself with the safety of the chemicals on the mystery wood stock.

Is there anything I'm missing? Who would do this work for me in the B.C. / Vancouver Island area for money?
 
you forgot the most important:
being concerned about 308win vs 7,62 NATO


all kidding aside;
-bedding is a major step up but this rifle is not the easiest to bed. I did my first bedding job on it, split it into 3 stages, search me for more details i wrote an article about it, it had something like 12 views I think :p

-also look for the popsicle stick method

actually read the stickies, everything important is mentioned there.
 
i tought my norinco m14 was a money pit, RIGHT until I started building an open division racegun, NOW we're talking money pit.
 
I am buying a new poly. I will feed it 150 gr handloads in GI brass ( loads reduced by 10% of course re: Saami) I don't think I will do anything with it but hunt and shoot. After about 3000 rounds I MAY start to rod it a bit.

The majority of the tuning and accurizing techniques are availlable here in the m14 stickies. For the do it yerself home "gunnsmith" the m14 FAQ's and master Hungry's clinic downloads are must haves.
For those who would rather have someone do the work for them.... I offer full armorer/gunsmithing services an fiberglass stock mods for the M14. I am located in the Lower mainland but service all of Canada.
 
Unless I am wrong 168gr HPBT is NOT a hunting round. My understanding is that hunting is best carried out with lead or ballistic (plastic) tipped bullets. This ensures the most transfer of energy at shorter ranges and is more likely to result in a quick kill (more humane and less tracking required).

168gr HPBT was a solid match round and then was adopted more widely as a sniper round because military ammo cannot be lead tipped for Geneva Convention reasons, and because humans take less energy to kill than deer due to having less mass.

If I am wrong please correct me, I am pro hunting, but also pro humane kills for the animal.

I agree with this. Varmit round and awesome match round.
Federal and winnie 165 grain premium soft points are standard hunting fare

actually I tought hollow points were not allowed as per geneva's convention, thus military ammo is always ball. surplus hollow point you might find were intended for national match purposes
but the rest is alright, soft point is best for cleanly taking an animal

Not entirely true.

IIRC, the hague text says that no bullet used must be designed to wound. One way to get rid of the then-new soft point bullets (dum-dum designed). Banned hollow-points would be of the expanding type. The match rounds are allowed and is currently issued; the hollow point aids in ballistic and accuracy. Thats what they say at least.
 
In the meantime, one can find all kinds of decent deals on FMJ 147 gr bullets in bulk amounts. Once you reload these babies, they are great for practice work and improving your shooting skills. Then for hunting load up some 165 PSP's or Nosler Ballistic Tip hunting bullets. For earthpigs (groundhogs), I love to load up the 125 gr Speer TNT bullet; light recoil and same noise.

Read the sticky(ies) as much as you can. You will figure out all kinds of tweaks with/for this rifle. The (I won't divulge the agency) LEO Armorers I just taught are getting 1/2" groups with the Norc M14 factory barrels in Chu wood stocks. They employed the same techniques I've shown many of you.

Learn as much as you can and soon you will realize why this forum is the most friendly and supportive hangout on the CGNutz network! :D

couldnt agree more, because this is the only sub forum dedicated to ONE firearm.

every other sub forum gets plagued by stuff like:
GLOCK VS 1911
270WSM VS 308WIN
WHOS THE BEST? CHUCK NORRIS OR BRUCE LEE?


around here there is only one way, the m14 way
 
Personally I've always preferred the old original AI Dutch built AR 10 rifles over any of my M14s ....
but then the Canucklehead Govt went and made the AR 10 a BAD BLACK GUN!!!

So now I've had to settle for the NON restricted M14 clones as my "Second" choice.
