I made an adapter from M15 x 0.75 the oddball thread used on the flash suppressor nut that threads onto the end of a Norinco barrel, to 5/8 x 24 so that any common muzzle brake can be used.

This is my first attempt. It's threaded onto a barrel stub from a shortened m14s barrel. I'm going to see if I can make it look better, more compact.

I put a similar brake on a shortened m14s that I threaded to 1/2" and reamed out a 223 brake. Worked really well. But I wanted something similar that I could use on an unmodified m14s barrel.

Let me know if my link to the pictures doesn't work. I'm using Google pictures.

Too difficult for me to machine one what is retained by the castle nut just like the flash hider. So, I'm doing it screw on. I also prefer the aesthetics of a screw on. I'm on my second one, still don't have it absolutely perfectly aligned. It's tricky, because you have to align the internal and external threads perfectly. Easier said than done. I thought it would be easier than its turning out to be. I made the first one by machining one end, flipping it and machining the other. Not good enough. So version two, I did the whole operation, both threads, without removing the piece from the chuck. Still not perfect. Third try, I am going to cut the internal threads first, screw it onto a barrel, align it in the headstock like chambering a barrel (ie center both ends then use a range rod to make sure it aligns axially), then then cut the tenon and threads for the brake.

Fun little project.

That’s kinda cool.

Any reason why you couldn’t thread the “shiny bit” so that the brake is closer to the muzzle? Just how much material between the ID and the OD of the adaptor?

John

The threaded recess into which the barrel screws is 0.60 deep of the 1.0 " overall length of the shiny solid appearing portion. It has to be a certain minimum depth to fully engage all of the threads that don't begin until further from the muzzle. I can minimize length by either making the adapter shorter, and / or having the barrel screw even further into it. So currently there is approx. 0.40" of solid remaining between the muzzle and the beginning of the externally threaded 5/8 x 24. That can be reduced as it serves no purpose, and as this project evolves and I refine my dimensions. Its $2 worth of metal, but 2 hours of time as I make up things as I go.

In an ordinary scenario is a brake supposed to seal to the barrel by having A) The muzzle end seal against an internal shoulder (which is what I am doing internally in the adapter, as that is the way I believe an M14 flash suppressor seals) B) The brake seals against an external shoulder or C) The threads when tightened with a lock nut or crush washer against a shoulder form a good enough seal?

I have been refreshing this site for almost 6 months. I have even sent them an email asking when they will be in. They replied with as soon as the order arrives.
IF there is any where else to get this product, I would be indebted if you pointed me in the right direction.

@m14medic

It’s not a controlled item. You should be able to get the part direct from the USA.

Try Brownelles, Treeline M14 or SEI directly....

Thank you John!
I will do some searching here. Didnt know I was able to get it sent from the states directly. This just gets me that much closer to my finished project.
If im not mistaken, these will work on the medium m1a stainless steel barrels?

Project is done. Made this one, my fourth, from hardened shafting. It took the cold blue pretty well. Decided to skip the crush washer or lock nut and just indexed it on the lathe, then cut the flats at 90 degrees. I made the part that screws over the barrel, long enough that it covers the splines on the barrel. I thought it looked better that way. I also think it makes the barrel look shorter. This is a full length barrel. Can't wait to see how it shoots. Last brake I did on a shorty barrel, worked really well.
