M16A4 Build **UPDATED**

Nice job.

What kind of sight is that with the marked elevation adjustments?

AP

That would be the Matech back-up iron sight. It's part of the US SOPMOD package and at the moment the only BUIS issued to Army rifles.

Uhm - wrong

The KAC 300mBIS is the M4 SOPMOD sight.

The M16A4 is not a SOPMOD item - but a Marine and Army issue item. There is no set BIS for it.

FWIW as far as SOF other BIS's go
The Mk18 has the LMT BIS, while the Mk12 Mod0 has the ARMS #40 and the Mod1 has the KAC 600m, the Mk11 has the KAC600m. The Troy has also been bought by SOCOM

All the MATECH's I see here are on conventional force guys. It has a NSN and is an in house sight (Picatinny Arsenal) thus a cheaper option for units without a real budget.

Good to know, thx Kevin. BTW I hear that the KAC 300 m BIS isn't that popular in the SOF community for some reason and is being dumped in favour of other options (ARMS 40L).

Great job on the rifle!

I understand that the USMC went with a big purchase of 104,000 Trijicon ACOG optic for the M16A4 series. I wonder if the US Army will follow ...
No need for a backup sight other than the removable carry handle.

This is my A4 type:

The ARMS#40 series is going nowhere in the SOF world -- they have a terrible habit up not folding up when exposed to a lot of dust (Helicopter trips etc.).
For units that can buy their own stuff (outside the SOPMOD) the TROY BIS's seem to be the choice of the day (for the last year or so). So CAG and AWG, *and the OGA folk (technically not mil but they hang in the same circles) been showing up with Troy front and Rear's on their guns

NAVSOF due to their bumping and banging off ships and getting dunked occassionally seem to prefer the FIXED series - like the LMT and Larue ones. Even DEVGRP guys in my neck of the woods have those on their guns (and I'm pretty far from water).

As far as the Army SF goes 99% of the Group guys have the KAC 300 on their M4's -- interesting enough most of the guys with the SPR/Mk12's have started to show up with the Mod1 version (the KAC tube etc one) over the Mod0 (PRI tube etc).

I still see about 75% of M16A4's with no BIS -- or with a det ch mounted to the M5RAS off one side

Troy Industries Front & Rear BUIS = Good, best folders.

LaRue & LMT Fixed Front & Read BUIS = Good, rock solid fixed.

KAC = Good to go also.

Just purchased a SureFire M951C illuminator from a fellow CGN'er. All that's missing now is a Blackhawk SWIFT 3-point sling that is on its way.

The M16A4 build is now finished, complete with USGI Lan-Cay pig-sticker and 3-point sling. Total weight is just under 5 kgs with 2 5/30 magazines. I like my toys heavy, they feel expensive that way :D
Can't wait to take her out shooting. I wonder if the GRGC will allow for a bayonet charge?
