M1A Precision Challenge 1.5 MOA

WAY TO GO Pr.

Looks like I get to be the first of many to congratulate you, well done .

And a Norc too....whoda thought it LOL.
The Varget seems to work really well, and you don't seem to have met a sad end.

Thanks Lost, Rut...it's funny, although the Varget load made the Challenge, I shot a final group using a 3031 test load of 39.5 grains and got a 0.7 MOA. Thought I'd never get the rifle shooting again after swapping out my worn-out shim but after some persistent tweaking I think it's going to work out - phew!. I've only gotten to the point where my groups are almost "normal" as of last weekend.

Great shooting! And sweet rifle too

Great shootin!
Even better is you didn't have to void the warranty on a high end springer, JRA or LRB with the shooting of reloads to get there

Chalk up another Norc! (I think, assuming my math's right...)

So earlier this week I couldn't help but notice that WSS had Federal Gold Medal Match with 175gr Sierra Matchkings on for $27.99 a box. "Wallet," I said "follow my lead - we're doing another 1.5MOA challenge attempt."

Today was a beautiful day for some range therapy, warm and sunny and no real wind to speak of...

I warmed up with some .22 rimfire, then got down to business with my M305 (the saga of this build can be found in this thread http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1091420-quot-That-ll-do-pig-that-ll-do-quot)

I wanted to take my time and keep the barrel from getting too hot, so I paced myself for most of the morning. When I'd put all 25 rounds downrange I walked up to find this:

That definitely had a promising look to it, but I'd left the callipers at home and I was too impatient to wait so I called it a day. Here's how it measured out:

Group 1: 1.489" (1.422 MOA), this one barely squeaked under the wire...

Group 2: 1.199" (1.145 MOA)...

Group 3: 1.372" (1.310 MOA)...

Group 4: 0.990" (0.946 MOA), the only one to crack the 1-MOA mark and the best of the bunch by far...

Group 5: 1.379" (1.317 MOA), I initially measured this one incorrectly as 1.337"...

All shots were taken at 100 yards, off of a bench with a front and rear bag, loading single shots from the magazine with the gas system on. Average group size was 1.286" (1.228 MOA). All groups have five shots (groups 4 and 5 each have two shots nearly through the same hole).

I measured each group from the edges of the fouling marks on the paper, I'm not sure if that's standard or not. I don't have any group measuring software so if someone wants to crunch my photos through theirs to double check my results, they're more than welcome. I can take additional photos and send them if they need to be a certain size or format.

Anyway, feeling pretty good today - and wishing I'd bought more than two boxes of those Federals, lol!

I will set up later in the summer and try your challenge with my NM, S&B combo, i will try to have 5 consecuive groups 1.5 MOA or less on the same target on video... JP.

Pop,

Congrats :sniper: ! Great shooting and with commercial ammo no less. These Norcs sure seem to perform with some easy tweaking - just call us Bubba. It's great to see these affordable rifles shooting well and providing good evidence that they don't have to be 3-4 MOA rigs, even with standard weight barrels.

Went to the range today with hi expectations....my M1A can do this challenge, I know that,
Fail!!! what is going on I say to myself, going to have to try again I answered....first sign of insanity I'm afraid.
I have never experienced stringing with the M1A until today, 5 groups, first 2 under 1.5 and two that were almost 2 inches, one of the groups was horizontal in a staight line the next vertical in a straight line, figured my scope must be pooched so I set the rifle aside for a while to lick my wounds, came back and shot a 1.174 group so I guess the scope fixed itself

damn I really like these threads :D an escape from the mundane if you will.
nice to see guys getting out there and showing everyone what the m14 platform can do.
it has definitely motivated me and a whole bunch of others no doubt, to spend more time on the trigger and less time at the bench ;)

Rodney - I think this is going to be a slam dunk next time you shoot. The horizontal stringing could be trigger control, while I would suspect barrel temperature on the vertical string. You're going to get this soon, then we'll have to try it at the 200 yard range.

Great shooting pop, nice looking range too.

Thanks guys, it's a good feeling that all that tweaking voodoo really works, though I lucked out with the base rifle I think. Rodney, that's the Saskatoon Wildlife Federation range due to be closed and (fingers crossed) moved shortly to make way for a new bridge :(

Nice shooting pop,! So finally going to take some well needed vacation time and try this out, just as soon as I get back from Vegas lol. Question for the regulars how fast are you throwing lead down range? Are you shooting your 5-5shot groups consecutively or allowing the barrel to cool? Not that it matters a whole bunch I'm going to try both ways see how they differ

Looking forward to seeing you get this done Rut. Not sure about my MV (guessing in the 2500 fps range) but I typically put 5 to 10 downrange to warm up the barrel then shoot all 5 groups consecutively at a slow but even pace...say one every 30 to 60 seconds.

I find that my rifle shoots high and to the left when the barrel is left unfired too long then strings down and then stabilizes by the 4th round. As they say though...every rifle is a little different.

Thanks! When I shot this one the range was pretty crowded and I couldn't count on being able to keep my barrel consistently warm, so I tried to leave 3-5 minutes between each shot so that if I had to shoot from a cold bore after a cease-fire it wouldn't go off in the weeds.
