M1A Precision Challenge 1.5 MOA

ALL RIGHT!!!
Finally made the challenge with my M1A loaded, went to the range yesterday, no distractions, a little wind, and LOTS of mirage and foggy glasses!
M1A loaded in crappy plastic stock that flexes like rubber! 168 Grain Hornady match, 40.5 grains of H4895, Bushnel 8 to 32 power scope
5 shot groups at 100 yards shot off rest and rear bag groups were 1.488, 1.308, 1.445, 1.175, and 1.401

Decided to try my Norinco with open sights since I stole the scope off it for the M1A!
Didn't suceed but pretty happy with the results considering factory Norc sights and my bad eyes!
M14S Norinco in Blackfeather stock, 168 grain Hornady match, 39.3 grains of IMR 3031, factory Norinco sights
Front rest, rear bag at 100 yards, groups were 1.834, 2.206, 1.852, 2.672, 1.494
Tried moving my shoot and see target to 5 different spots on the target so messed up the center target somewhat with the sticky target insisting on taking the paper with it! all 25 shots hit the shoot and see target so I endedup with an interesting 3.213 25 shot group.

Hey Tony. Thanks and welcome to our Canadian site. Great to have another knowledgeable M14 Forums member here.

Rodney - Big Congrats!! Long chase but worthwhile when we got here. Great shooting. Also nice groups iron sighted with the Norc.

Funny how there have been 3 Challenge winners just in the last few days.

Thanks Paul,
Just downloaded the rest of the pictures, sucks using this tablet but does the job in the long run!

Congratulations Rodauto! Great shooting and nice rifles
Thanks Pop,
Still working on getting these rifles put together, just recieved the M14.ca rear butt stock for the Norince and the op rod spring guide for the M1A today so working on both. I'm sure my AR15 will be glad to get it's butt stock back as I stole it for the Norinco while I decided what stock I wanted!

Some nice shooters in here. Got close with Federal 168gr GMM today. Two groupings pushed me out of the 1.5 mark but I'm getting closer...The measurements were outside-outside, didn't adjust for center to center. Prone with bipod @ 100yds:

Just need some more practice and ammo now :D

Thanks! Yeah, it really is. The only other stuff I've put through the rifle so far is the Norc 147gr and Hornady Steel Match 155gr and that stuff was producing 2.5-3.5" groupings. This Gold Medal stuff is certainly out shooting me and my rifle. Getting together some reloading equipment and hopefully I'll have a load developed in a little bit to tighten it up even more.

At my second try, i got it made with an average of 1.249 MOA, here the détails....
Rifle SA NM M1A topped by a S&B 5X25X56 PMll PF4L....
Ammo is Hornady 155 gr Amax Match factory fodder....
Sunny, perfect conditions....
1.152...
1.376...
1.182...
1.150...
1.387...
Average 1.249....

Caramel - Nice shooting and with factory fodder no less. You're making it look too easy with that beautiful National Match. You are now #5 on the list of winners. See post #2 of this thread.

Now we're going to have to move it out to 200 to make it a real challenge. :stirthepot2:

^ I will be, I can't seem to find any 155gr BTHP Hornady bullets in Canada. Except for off of Tradex, which I'd have to call in to order. I have a hot load with 155gr's I think could snag me a good challenge.

If can get in a range day anytime soon I'm planning on trying it again at 200 yards to see what happens...

So I went back to the range today with my M1A to try some new loads... I completed the challenge with this rifle but just barely. The load I was using was a generic H4895 40.5 grain load with Hornady match 168 grain bullets that I first tried and worked well in the plastic stock from SA.
Decided to try the 3031 that was working well in the Norinco M14S to see what I could do and was getting mixed results over the last few trips, would get 3 groups under 1.5 then a 1.704 and a 1.8 group??
Still not bad but expected/ hoped for better so decided to do some load testing. 39.5 grains IMR 3031 was Horrible.....(.902 to 2.943)
39.7 seems to be the magic number though, 5 shot groups were .405, 1.355, 1.122, 1.322, and 1.310 average of .839

Guess I should have started this with "so I ditched the plastic stock and put the M1A in a USGI stock and my groups got worse"! Just realized I wasn't telling the whole story. So with the USGI stock I had no choice but to work up a new load, sure glad I did.

Pictures show the rifle in it's new USGI stock with the leather I stole off my Marlin 45 long colt cowboy gun and put some foam under it so I could see through the scope!
The stock is only stained so far not finished as I am going to " attempt" to glass bed it soon, will then finish the finish!
