m305 Barrel Index Issue

Hey Guys,

So I have purchased a M305 from a site online (which I will not name). The rifle came with a Boyds walnut stock and is in excellent condition, I am extremely happy with the rifle asides from one issue, Barrel Indexing. I do understand that it isnt truly the Canadian brokers issue if the barrel is improperly indexed. To make matters worse i work in a remote camp so this is the first time using the weapon since i have purchased it over 5 months ago (haven't been home in awhile)

The issue I noticed at the range today is that the Op Rod guide is brushing the bottom of the barrel and causing a shiny area, this was what drew my attention causing me to look into this issue future. I also noticed my shots were dead center at 25m and 50m however when i worked out to 100m I was left of my point of aim, some of this could be due to improper indexing, some to sight alignment.

Once I returned home, I placed the rifle on a level surface and used a laser level to see if the front sight is standing vertical or to an angle. As I suspected the front sight is slightly canted to the left (when looking down the barrel) which indicates an over index barrel.

My question is, what are my options to fixing an over-indexed barrel? Can i bring it to a gun smith and ask him to "unwind" the barrel slightly without risk of the rifle having a major malfunction. I am located in Nova Scotia, are there any known gunsmiths to CGN who work on m305s? I havnt been able to take it to the farm and test it at 200m+ which would show the effects of indexing issues correct?

The Weapon functions fine with the odd miss cycle, round loaded into the chamber but bolt didnt fully #### hammer.

like the man said, read the stickies. I,m assuming you have a 22" barrel. the chicom flash hider is notorious for having misaligned engaging lugs, thus putting the front sight off. if you are hitting 0 at 50, you are not out by much. read the stickies, those guys are much smarter than me. your op rod guide is probably loose, allowing the op rod to rub, not hard to rectify. you are about to get really intimate with your rifle, enjoy the addiction.

The operating rod striking the bottom of the barrel is not good. Causes could be:

1. Op rod guide loose, (quite likely)
2. After market op rod spring guides sometimes require filing for proper fit if your reciever is out of spec, (it happens sometimes)
3. Your barrel is grossly out of index, (not that common, usually the flash hider was poorly cast/milled)
4. Your op rod is bent or very loose in the reciever op rod track. (Check the op rod with two straight edges, if it is bent you pretty much need a replacement since it is a nightmare to straighten. If your op rod tab is very thin replacement may be required.)

get your rifle to a gunnutter who has been to a clinic. He can look it over for you. Best of luck.

If you are really annoyed and you are losing sleep over it, send me a PM and we can see what we can do for you. :)
It's a 5 minute job. I don't want to discuss all sorts of Innernet solutions and speculations on here. There are solutions.

Cheers, Barney.

The op rod on a M14 is supposed to make very light contact at the chamber area of the barrel. Leaving shiny marks is normal. The op rod is not supposed to have any significant drag at the chamber area of the barrel. Be sure that your barrel is indexed properly and the op rod guide is installed correctly.
