M305 bolt issue

So only recently my m305 bolt with shoot out the extractor after a couple rounds are shot. I tried a usgi extractor and it still fell apart. Any ideas on why my bolt extractor doesn't stay I would really appreciate it.

Simply to clarify, the extractor is the hook that snaps over the case rim...;

It seems (from reading many many threads on this fine site) that this is relatively common, tho hasn't happened to me, that the extractor gets slapped out of the bolt once in a while.

Possibly due to the end of its pin extension sticking out of the bottom of the bolt a bit too much (mine is below the nether surface of the bolt... just sayin) and getting a bump from the round below.... an expert should be by soon.

I ordered usgi extractor spring and plunger aswell as an ejector spring and it still popped out after 2 shots. Maybe I'll order one more. I was also thinking maybe tge clearances in my 305 bolt are worn. Would it be a better idea and buy a full Fulton armory bolt?

Well I went shooting with a usgi extractor today and I got about 40 rounds out of it and the the extractor poped out again. Unfortunately I lost it in the gravel and dirt. I'm at the point now where I want to just replace the bolt. I was thinking maybe another m305 bolt or a Fulton armory gen 2 bolt. Any feedback would be appreciated

It really depends on your rifle. Many mid 2000 rifles will accept a Fulton bolt easily. Late 2000 rifles to present may not. ( in the newer rifles the bolt will not even engage the lugs when dropped in). You will have to try and see. Good luck and safe shooting.

I've read that I should try new NOS usgi extractor spring plunger and extractor, and if that doesn't work then I guess I'll have to spend the cash on a Fulton...

I know to check the extractor pin isn't sticking out of the bolt, but what else could cause this? A bad mag or norinco 7.62x51 rounds. I'm running out of solutions

Its too bad you are so far away, I have an old nor bolt lying aroung here.

Truth of the matter is that the hole for the extractor could have been over sized or drilled on an angle. QC is not job number one with what ever high school class puts them together.

I am having the same issue with my shorty. This has happened twice to me. At least I recovered all the parts this time except the detent plunger for the extractor. I will buy a bunch of spares this time.

If this continues I will buy a new bolt and plead with Barney to lap it for me.

think this was my problem, swapped a new PB part into it and have had a few 100 rnds of trouble free operation

Guys, if you haven't seen it already take a look here.

I had the same trouble with mine the last time i took it to the range...i beleive that it could be that the extractor spring or ejector spring lost some tension...

Gus Fisher recommends a minimum ejector spring length to ensure spring tension.

A little further on the length of the extractor spring.

When I ran the National Match M14 rifle rebuild section in the RTE Shop at Quantico, VA on active duty, I was concerned about ensuring the length of the extractor spring was long enough on EVERY NM M14 we built or rebuilt.
We were in fact a “Depot” or Arsenal level repair shop for NM, sniper and MEUSOC weapons – so each Section Head COULD make up a standard for lengths of springs and everything else with having to build the NM M14.

Prior to the time I was the Section Head, they inspected the springs, but as long as they weren’t noticeably bent or worn, they did not replace the spring and detent. The problem was that since our rifles got shot a lot and many of the extractor spring and plungers had been in the rifles for a long time, we could potentially be sending out new built or rebuilt rifles with worn extractor springs that would not last long.

You really DON’T want an extractor to come out during a Match or even practice, because it will ruin a shooter’s mental program for at least that stage of fire and perhaps the rest of the match. It could cause the shooter to lose a match. I actually saw that a few times while I was the Junior Armorer on THE Marine Corps Rifle Team in 1975. So when I became the Section Head, I instituted my own personal standards for the extractor spring and plunger.

When we built brand new NM rifles for Post and Station Teams, I demanded we use brand new extractor springs and plungers as long as we had them in stock and I did my best to make sure we always had new ones in stock for those rifles. I also demanded we use brand new ejectors and springs. Since those rifles were sent out to the Post and Station Teams, we might not see them for rebuild for anywhere from 6 to 10 years. The NM Armorers assigned to the Post and Station teams were allowed to replace the springs as needed, of course, but I felt we were not doing them justice if we did not put brand new springs in them.

Now, for the Marine Corps Match NM M14 rifles, we tuned them up or rebuilt them every year after the Match, so it was not like they were ever shot much before they came back through our Section. So we used good used extractor springs in those rifles. On those rifles, I set the minimum length of the spring at 15/32” and I inspected EVERY rifle we built or tuned up and ensured the springs were that long. (My own personal opinion for commercial semi auto M14’s and real M1 Garands is the extractor spring should be replaced when it goes below 15/32”.)

When I first took over as the Section Head, I published a new and more involved Final Inspection Check List and gave a copy to all my NM Armorers. I taught a class on the NEW things in the list and told them I was going to hold them to everything on the list. For the first few weeks I was Section Head, I rejected MOST of the rifles built in the Section during the first Final Inspection for not complying with the list. Some of the NM Armorers in my section complained I was being too tough, but their complaints landed on deaf ears. However, after the first couple of weeks at the Marine Corps Matches that year, one of my Armorers who had complained the most came up and told me he now understood why I had done it because they were having virtually no maintenance issues with the rifles.

Great info here. I got out and shot with a NOS Usgi extractor with used USGI extractor spring and plunger. I got about 40 rounds out of it so I was confident the problem was finally fixed. But after shooting a couple quick burts it popped out again. The rifle has had at least 600 rounds through it with the norc bolt internals and then just decided to fail. The last thing im going to try is buying NOS USGI bolt spring kit and see if it will hold it together better. I will also make sure the extractor spring is above the recommended length.

Is there any other things to look for that could cause this problem?

yomomma how much would you want for the bolt?

I miss my m305

Well I just used the good ole 30-06 trick to rebuild my M305 bolt. I installed a new Fulton Armory extractor spring and detent. I will take it to the range this week some time and blast through a bunch of Norc ammo. Fingers Crossed.

Well i tried another spring set and a NOS USGI extractor and it stays in but still pops out once and a while. I've read alot into replacing bolts and having to lapp mosty of them into proper lug contact and head space. Im thinking of buying a fully assembled fulton bolt, or maybe just another chinese bolt. If i needed to get a bolt properly installed where would be a good place to get it dont. I live in the fraser valley BC>

Where would one buy a Fulton armory bolt? In stock anywhere?
