what happened to your bolt?- this is NOT something "just to do"- if you're looking to to remove the cosmoline, compressed air is your friend-unless you've lost the extractor or need a piece replaced, LEAVE IT ALONE- and this isn't just me talking- i've had m14s for about 30 years, and never had to take a bolt to pieces yet - that goes for real AND norcs

Yeah the only real reason to take it down is to get the cosmoline out of it, snip a couple coils off the spring, or to replace a part. I'd leave the thing alone.

never need to clean if i shoot only corrosive???
Its like an SKS, if the pin move freely, you are good to go. I didnt shoot my M305 yet except 3 rounds to mesure the cases but i have taken the bolt appart before use to remove cosmo and oil and many times after to get used to that, using the combination tool in the cleaning kit and a empty 30-06 case for reassembly but the norc extractor spring are longer and its more difficult to put it back together.

If you don't have brake cleaner , just pour boiling water all over the bolt and then lightly oil things. Have lots of fun with the addiction.

Cheers

brake cleaner pro-tip, always keep some room temperature water on hand in case you get it in your eyes. Wear glasses when you spray the stuff. When you shoot into crevices it can spray back right in your face, or in my case, a whole load of it can get in your eyes and you're trying to wash it out under cold tap water and you can only handle 3-4 seconds at a time.

I think this is why the directions say that you should hold the can back 2 feet from what you're shooting at. I guess I'm lucky I got to read the directions afterward trolool

yer've got that sideways - and there ain't no gun you NEVER need to clean- if you shoot corrosive, you have to clean it just as often , if not more, but with BOILING water, to wash the corrosive salts out of the barrel and chamber- if you use non-corrosive, you need to clean it in the conventional manner

I highly doubt any 308 ammo we have access to is corrosive, unless you scored some really old oddball stuff at a gun show or something.

And . . . . wait . . . . the M14 COMES with a bolt disassembly tool. :s

off hand , i know some of the chec, south american , and most of the BERDAN primed is - once you get off this continent, it's a CRAP SHOOT- as for the m14 combo tool being used for bolt disassembly, that's a SKILL not easily mastered- that's why folks have either made up tools to do the job, or modded 06 cases- moreover, the combo tool SLIPS just as you get it into position- the norc soring, being loger, can be a real b*tch to get back in- that's the trick- not disassembling the bolt, but putting it back together

I personally see no reason NOT to own a bolt tool... If you actually use your M14 rifles frequently.
Yes you can do it without a tool, you can "clean" it by other means

But you can pound a nail with a rock and people still go the lengths and expense to purchase a hammer ;)

It's a good tool to have in the kit for those "I don't want to screw around moments"

Just my opinion ;)

I have a bolt disassembly tool, and find it handy. I took my bolt apart and found a small brass ring had formed around the firing pin. Seems that brass flakes had been pounded into a small wire ring around the pin. The tool makes the job low effort, and gives you time to concentrate on the task of getting the extractor out and back in. That can be a little finicky, and I appreciate the tool freeing up both hands.

There's that czecho 308 surplus that's corrosive, the only stuff I know of
