I've been looking at the M305s and thinking I'd like one.
Alot of mods are available, but would I be happy with it stock,
or will I be sucked into the moneypit? How accurate is a stock rifle?
Thanks.

the synthetic stock isn;t bad, but beside a usgi fibreglass or boyds walnut stock it is sub par...
moneypit...yes, or no depending what you want to do with it, as soon as you want to add a scope you'll see what kind of moneypit the m14 is...
i have own 3 m14s they ranged between 1.5 to 3 moa out of the box...

A mount and decent scope put me back about as much as the rifle itself.
I did order an op rod spring and guide but have no more plans to upgrade at this point.
It shot well enough before that to be satisfied.
I like the black stock, don't like the steel butt plate.

I have three of them (which matches the number of shooters in the house.) I have never really bothered to do a full accuracy test. All three can hit the "dinger" at 200 yards.

Mostly stock; unitized gas system on 2 of 3, all 3 have op rod spring guides. Only 1 has an issue with the rear sight.

m14 $430-$500
scope mount $60
scope $200
cheek rest/pad: $45

Not many people i know are happy with stock, you will succumb to temptation and start to spend :)

I'm Happy

I bought mine last year. It has the synthetic stock. Did a little tuning at Hungry's clinic in Calgary last year and I am a happy clam with it. I don't mind the stock, as I have a few other rifles with synthetics as well. It shoots accurately and is very reliable. Plus it looks very cool.

I am not putting a scope on it, as I want it to be more of a 200 yard gun or so. Remember it is what it is, a reproduction battle rifle, as opposed to a tack driver. It takes a pounding in the bush and still nails a 4" group at 200 yards.

He is right on. Buy it, shoot it. Does a new pickup with DVD player and leather seats get your firewood in any better than a plain model? Anyone who wants any semi-auto to be a precision rifle needs deep pockets.

That's what I'm worried about!
By the way, I ordered one.
Now I have to figure out how to tell the wife!

Its been hard, but I've been avoiding the temptation to over-spend, after an initial spree where I acquired a USGI glass stock, a Boyd's walnut stock, a Chu-wood stock (for its metal parts), an M1 Garand rear sight, and a little tuning. So far, over $1100 in and I'm stoping. Mine's a 2009 model, and it appears tight, no slop, the trigger is great, and the metal finish seems durable. What a great rifle! I use it as an up-close "battle rifle" so a scope, while tempting, is just not necessary.

I can't understand why so many replace the barrels. Mine seems to shoot very straight, and its chrome-lined -- an added bonus.

It will happen no matter what rifle you buy, enjoy it.

Mine was impulse buy when i was at the club and they had a m14 on display, took it home and wife went mental at me. I still have the rifle :)

Mine's A Darling (Wife)

Regarding buying my rifles and pistols, my wife is real easy to get along with. I don't have to really tell her, but I always inform her, as she gets the mail, and the firearms certificate is so official looking, she knows anyway.

Her rule is quite simple....for every gun I buy, I have-ta buy her jewelry of equal value at some point in the year. So her birthdays and Christmas and even anniversaries and mothers day are filled with finery. I'm almost broke, but we're in love and happy.

I also have my toys!! :D :p
