I'm going to be buying an M38 and have narrowed my choices down between ordering one from either Westrifle or Corwin Arms.
I'm just wondering if anyone had ordered one from either and had anything to say about it, as I've heard pretty much strictly positive reviews of both companies.

Thanks

I can only speak from my experience. I have ordered numerous rifles from Corwin Arms and have had a positive experience every time. Martin has great communication and answered all of my [endless] questions.. haha. I have also heard good things from Westrifle but have not had experience with them. Based on all of my experiences with Corwin Arms I would have to fully endorse purchasing from them.

I dealed severals times with Westrifle anmd only positives experiences also heard positives comments about Corwins Arms but never deal with yet. just know what you want, manys M38 have been refurd with M44 stock. Personnally i wouldn't pay top price for a M38 with an M44 stock on it but that's me. Last thing i can say is to get one with the nicest bore possible.

Stay below $400. Most, if not all M38s you come across will have M44 stocks. Not a big deal. Both of mine do. Unless your collecting, don't give it a second thought. Original all matching number and stock M38 will go for a premium, $400+. But only from a private seller, dealers would likey sell it for the same price as the rest of their M38s. Bore is important, but also request a matching bolt, it will ensure the likelyhood of correct headspaceing.

is improper headspacing a common issue with M38s?

Not with M38 in particular. Just any milsurp without a numbers matching bolt has the possibility of head space problems. If it is numbers matching you know it was for sure fitted properly to the rifle at the arsenal.

okay thanks!

I would also recommend,

Frontier Firearms

and Xtreme Shooting Centre.

http://store.xtremegunshootingcente..._info&cPath=1_96&products_id=502#.U2k3Jnko70w

Both have M38s in stock at good prices. I've bought from both.
I now retract recommending Xtreme shooting center.

I bought an M38 and all was fine with that sale.

Today I had the unfortunate pleasure of meeting the owner.

Snide, condescending, and full of hot air. He also lied to my face and tried to knowingly sell me a gun that was previously returned for being damaged. Mechanically, not cosmetically.

I've spent my last dollar there.

Good advice generally except the bolt head is easily detachable and not serialized - the relationship between receiver and bolt head define the headspace.
Head space problems are "uncommon". Buying a NO GO gauge isn't justified unless you have a number of Mosins - none of mine failed.

I picked up a M38 late last fall from Westrifle, not sure if its the same batch they have now but paid a bit more for a museum quality perfect hand picked M38 in a 38 stock. No refurb marks, all matching, and perfect shape less a few marks from the crate.

As for M38 shooter, picked a mismatched numbered in M44 wood, with pitting a frosted bore for 250 bucks from a local dealer. It shoots great and i'm taking it deer hunting this fall.

I should also mention a user on here who sells on the EE, weimajack.

He has threads with many kinds of milsurps/firearms. His communication is great, he gives a very detailed description of each firearm (what is matching, is the bore frosty, etc). Each rifle is individual with photos and from my experience it's exactly as described or better.

His M38 thread: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/foru...NT-M38-amp-SIMONOV-SKS-RIFLES-(new-selection)

Yes the Mosin bolt head is removable unlike most others. But it would indeed be a rare bird to have a numbers matching and a mismatched bolt head on a cosmoline soaked refurbed milsurp. Buying from someone second hand more likely, but if buying a refurb milsurp in cosmoline from a dealer highly unlikely to be a problem.
