M39 picure thread!!!

To continue with this thread.
How is it that Finns never made their own mosin receivers? I was under impression that they did? Anyone has an answer to it.
I took my m39 and it has Sestroretsk 1904 receiver.

Finland was a poor country and they could buy surplus Mosin rifles from other european countries that were non-standard to these sellers, most of whom standardized on the Mauser 98 (and therefore the eosins were dirt cheap). This was more cost effective than tooling up to build them.

Europe was awash in these after WW1. The axis powers captured hundreds of thousands of Mosin rifles prior to 1917. After the armistice the Axis distributed them to even more countries as part of war reparations.

I've been watching you guys have your fun with great envy. So tempted to grab one but just couldn't swing the price at the moment. But now I'm in the club! Found a lovely '44 VKT in postwar stock at the local gun show yesterday for a decent price from a gent who had a recent heart attack and was purging. He's had it for 30yrs (no markings yay) bought at SIR and it came complete with his stories with it.

I took it to the range today and found the POI is high, very high, like 8-10" high. Even a six o'clock hold doesn't put me in the paint. I see no elevation adjustment... Am I blind or am I looking for a taller front sight? If so, anybody know where to find one?

I meant to take pictures at the range today but.... squirrel!!

What ammo you using? These like heavy ball. Also, check if there are shims in the stock. With the handguard OFF, there should be slight up-pressure on the barrel at the muzzle. Sometimes the shims have been messed with by well-meaning owners and that can change the bedding and POI.

For taller sights, try Liberty Tree. They have several heights. $15 each.

Thanks Claven! Shims are where they should be, I don't understand what you mean by upressure. Does that mean the end of the stock should be pressing on the barrel? Or the barrel should be floating off the stock?
I was shooting surplus, Bulgarian factory 10 silver tip and Chinese wash from the 70's, both 147gr, I think, so that makes sense.

Are sizes marked on the sights or do I figure what I need and order length?

I will. I just have stock of light ball, enough so that getting another sight might be worthwhile. I was hitting the gong at 200yds, maybe I just need to shoot 200yd targets. Lasix needed for that though!

i had decent luck with 182 grain PPU FMJ.....its heavy ball that Yugos used in their MG84....got it from Tradex

I think I'll pick up a set of dies and start hand loading for this gun. Might try making some Mexi-match out of my surplus before going whole hog into brass.

Here's my 1942 VKT I picked up at P&S
Great shape and a great shooter. Outstanding trigger too
