M4 vs 1301 for Bush bear defense?

I've bought several new, and all only came with 1 choke. Yours with no choke at all, is a fairly recent model? Had read they had changed one version (military issued I believe?) to a fixed choke.
My M4 with no choke tubes that is bored cylinder is a version deemed restricted in Canuckistan because of its short barrel and collapsible stock with the thing that goes up in the back, etc etc.

My question and concern about the ones being sold now, modified choke tube only, is regarding how well they shoot slugs.

They shoot slugs very well, although some have better accuracy than others of course. I have not tried shooting a sabot slug in them however, won't speak to that.

With the barrel set up in that manner, I'd assume it's intended for buck shot (Federal flight control) loads. It'll probably shoot slugs well enough. There's really only one way to find out.

Must be a western thing.
Try the challenger slugs, I’ve seen them lots of places. After research looks like we are lucky in Canada to have such ready access to these as by all accounts they shoot well out of more things and have the most penetration to boot. They did about 4” groups at 40 yards from an old beretta a-301 28” full choke and then in my new 940 pro Turkey 18.5” it did pretty much ragged hole groups with Carlson extended IC choke. It was still respectable with modified and full but in comparing the IC stood out. Holosun eps with 32 moa circle reticle used on it, perfection. The 940 pro with that choke and half inch spacer removed to about 13 3/8” lop lands you around 6 lb 15 oz and math suggests those slugs recoil closer to 375 h&h (39 ft/lbs) lol but it’s a fun kind of pain. If anyone can shoot 4 of those under a second I’d love to see it haha. I got another one of them 940’s nib in case anyone is looking.

Just curious where you got the information about the penetration? I've gone though cases of challenger and score, both slugs are super soft would be very low in the brinell scale. unless challenge has another line I haven't tried

The Challenger 2-3/4" Magnum slugs have some major horsepower behind them, not to be confused with the Target Slugs which are very low recoil in comparison.

Out of stock at this sponsor but it will give you the product information.

Hope that helps ya out there. :)

If brenneke slugs aren’t available, what your looking for are the hard cast GUALANDI slugs.

You can find them loaded in challenger, rio, rws ammo and I’m sure others. They’re easy to id if your buying in person even if not loaded in clear/see through hulls

Challenger has tactical practice slugs?, no idea what use they are. Probably a foster style slug idk the hulls are blue and you can’t see the style of slugIMG_7874.jpeg
Score idk the one tactical slug loading I found a picture of and it’s clearly a foster style slug

Rio Royal Brenneke you can find at Cabelas, I found the Brenneke USA Magnum Crush at Calgary Shooting Centre. Just a heads up, the Magnum Crush pack some punch but weren't accurate at all out of my short mossy so buyer beware.

I think it's because the slugs weren't stabilizing - maybe a combo of the short barrel and long slug. I will definitely try some of the other Brenneke offerings if I get a chance.
The magnum crush “gold coloured”
Brenneke slugs are supposed to be shot in a rifled barrel (says it right on the box). Idk might be awesome in a rifled barrel, would sure beat trying to clean out sabot plastic.

When CSC offered them on here they acknowledged the (rifles barrel statement) and tested them for function and stated it didn’t do any damage to the barrels but I don’t recall any accuracy testing. Like any ammo test and practice with what you carry

the challenger slugs with the blue box and the whitetail deer head on the box? 1 1/8 oz, 504 gr hard cast at 1610 fps, $40/box of 10...you gone through cases of that???? Man, you've got a fat shoulder and a fat wallet. In my 7 lb semi-auto it's about 375 h&h recoil levels lol

And do you read much here? There's a member who's posted a number of times slug comparison penetration threads detailed with all the slugs and pictures and it's an amazing body of work to reference. How have you missed this??????

I'm curious if anyone finds that Challenger slug/00 leaves more "junk" in the barrel than other manufacturers.

The slugs i was referring to were the competition slugs as another member before posted about, I haven't tried any of the higher end challenger slugs that you are referring to, they do sound stout for sure, I'll keep my eyes peeled, I have had some bad luck with standard challenger loads and out of spec cheddite hulls that left me with a bad taste, and some primers that no matter how many times or what shotgun they were used in never ignited, mind you this was through a few cases of ammo, but was enough to stop from getting a a decent placing in competition. I would assume their higher end line has better QC. I actually havnt seen the video, I'll check it out.

yes find the review/tests by member here, and I've run quite a few boxes through 2 different shotguns now without issues, they shoot great and can go down any choke they say, shot well out of modified and full but really well from IC, hunting precision no prob and yes this is the Italian dgs-12 slug as pictured above with the 12 on it
