M40 Family - Who owns one?

Just be aware as Mcmillan calls the HTG stock the M40A1 but it isn't.

https://mcmillanusa.com/stock/htg-m40a1/

They used to have separate pages for them. Mcmillan does do runs of the actual M40A1 stocks with the Wichita swivels instead of the sling swivel studs and with the correct recoil pad. But they are usually only done when they have a specific amount of orders/interest. So clarify that with whomever you will be getting your stock from.

You are correct; ATRS quoted about a 5 month lead time for the true M40A1, and a price that I won't even mention but I'm sure you can imagine. Choice of sling swivels, recoil pad and Rem/Win inletting.

I am curious what people have used for barrels for M40 builds. Is there anything easily available up here that is closer to being "clone correct" or am I just as well off with IBI or another more off the shelf brand? I understand the M40 was a Rem varmint contour, 1.20-1.25" and around 0.83" at the muzzle, flat crowned. Slap an SPS barrel on and hope for the best?

I'm currently working on a similar project, but I'm lazy and am trying more for a reasonable facsimile than an exact rifle built from correct parts.

I was talking to ATRS about rebarreling a pencil barreled SPS I mistakenly bought, but I may keep that one for my 10 yr old to shoot, he's impatient to start hunting in 2 years. I might be better served buying a 700P as another member suggested here a couple weeks ago and calling it good.

A green Hi Lux scope, an old Garand sling, and a few other small parts will complete my rifle.

I think I just did exactly what he suggested. Why mess with greatness? Now to get home from northern Alberta so I can put together all the parts that have been trickling in.....

I was almost closed to have one M40A5
gun auction USA almost 2 months ago

In my personal opinion, WAY too much for a clone. They "speculate" that it's a USMC issued rifle but it wasn't. No US stamping on the receiver and the USMC only released a handful of M40A1 rifles IF that and wouldn't surplus something as new as the M40A5 which is still in service.

$6600 USD plus 18% means that rifle was $7788 USD. So over $9900 Canadian. You can build that exact same rifle for half that. In fact there are a couple really nice M40A3 clones for way less than that for sale in the classifieds.

Agree , I went alomst 3000$ and stopped.

Nice! 700P is a good option too, thanks. I will be curious how the green Hi-Lux works for you! What do you have for a stock??

It will be like Christmas when all the packages arrive. Expensive, but fun.

Since I am not home yet I can't, but if anyone has more pics!!!! Post em!!!

I ordered a walnut Heritage stock from Boyd's. Not exact but I couldn't find anything. There is a place in the States that does an M40 stock (there is one in an earlier post of this thread) but I didn't even get a response when I emailed them.

The Boyd's will hopefully do as a stop gap until I find something better.

For a rifle less optic very true, way too much. That said I had mine on EE with correct S&B optic ( less Gen2 reticle) and including a USMC only Brown Eagle Drag bag for $6500 and had ZERO inquiries. There just isn’t a huge market for clones up here.

The auction rifle doesn’t appear to have the correct M24 trigger either but does look nice.

I see the CMP rifle case ( they ship almost everything in those cases ) perhaps it’s a return stock and a new civilian built barreled action. It looks really nice but as you say big difference if someone represented it as an original issue rifle. The details all look good otherwise ( ignoring my OCD )

The Boyd's does look like a good option actually. How different would it be from a M40? Also, having never ordered from them, are they more of a drop in, minor fitting, or more? Also, $$$!

The end of the forestock will be a little different shape. The cap on the bottom of the grip will be a tiny bit different. The recoil pad vs the metal plate.

For the most part, many won't be able to point out the differences.

I ordered it with a basic finish, and 1/4" longer lop. They wouldn't delete the recoil pad or swivel studs when I asked. I am planning on stripping it, reprofiling the fore end and butt. The other Boyds stock I ordered last year required zero fitting. Price? Iirc, it was around 250 USD. As I said, a stop gap until I find something closer. I ordered it on Jan 12th, it shipped on the 25th. Currently in transit still stateside.

My collection of parts so far:

I'm using an old matte finished Leupold base and hoping to get this trigger complete (or find another like it):

Misc aluminum plates, but they are all curved. I found a flat one on the ee that is shipping now, but a few to play with:

The Hi Lux looks ok, the color is better in person than all the pics I found online:

And a copy of the clip slotting dimensions if I decide to get carried away with it:

Everything here was sourced here on CGN, very big thanks to the various members who were extremely helpful and patient with all my questions. Waiting for the stock to arrive, and still need to decide if I'm getting this SPS rebarreled or find a varmint 24".

Great pics deadman! FYI I also inquired with ATRS about the clip slotting and Rick said they hadn't done it in a while, but he figured about $250-300 for CNC/shop time. Not sure where you're located.

Deadman that looks fantastic! That’s a great collection of parts to start your build, can’t wait to see the finished product!

Well its not going to be clone-correct, as said before I just want something that will give me the feel of an early rifle. I will likely continue to hunt for the little things that will make it more period correct over time.

Off to a great start....version 1 will be a nice package right out of the gate!
Would like to see some pics of your stock as it comes from Boyd’s as well.
