njohnson..... You seem to own them all don't you ?

I always wanted to have a old 90’s Navy M86 on the G.Mcmillan & Co. action, but they went out of business after all the legal battles.

I do have a stock for one just in case somebody has a short action with an 308 bolt face for sale?

Well, I should give up here. I am working on an A1-ish build, but obviously I'm not that dedicated to it down to the details like some folks. I'm actually embarrassed now, mine is just a 700 SPS from Cabelas I was planning on slapping a camo stock on!

Not at all, enjoy whatever you shoot. Me, I’ve always tinkered with cars, worked on my house and liked late 20th century sniper rifles, so I think I enjoy trying to collect all the parts, and get details sorted out, as much as shooting the finished product. But there’s no judgement for guns that lack having every detail.

Hell, have a look at what the guys down south build and we can all call it a day. I just like the challenge of researching details of military issue specialty firearms, and I’m old enough to have started that research before a certain invention called “Google”

Now with things like the Ebay app, it becomes a lot easier....

Like I mentioned before you're doing what I was going to do until I went full stupid and spent my entire gun budget for the next year on a single rifle :p

Really if you put your SPS into an HTG stock and set it next to my rifle and step back, it's not going to look very different. Your barrel might be a fraction skinnier and a little bit longer.

You look at some of the M40A1 rifles the guys in the states build and they will have $10,000-$15,000 USD into their rifles. They will have a "return stock", make sure they get a receiver in the exact serial number range of a real M40A1, then the get the customer barrel, make sure all the correct markings are stamped onto it. Then they will fight to get a real Unertl MST-100 instead of the USO. Search for a real issued sling, etc. One member had his receiver serial number removed and matched the serial that was in the return stock and searched until he found the Unertl with the same serial number and offered the owner a stupid amount of money to sell it to him.

Here is the M40, 3-9 tombstone scope

If you bought this just last year I think this was the M40 I was going to buy but sold just before I could message the owner. This put me onto the slippery slope of wanting an M40/M40A1 that eventually led me to njohnson's doorstep.

I know, the sky is the limit. I like to get the details right too, but on some things I'm content with what I'd call a reasonable facsimile. With this rifle, I can always add to it if I need to or as funds allow. Unfortunately I may be treading water for a while as the scope and stock together pretty much means I'm forbidden from any more major purchases for a while.

Maybe a new trigger though, that isn't much more money. Its still a bone stock 700, just with a few things bolted on. Future might be some action work and a barrel, but it does seem to shoot well as is.

I've only had it out once, it was windy as Hell, and -20. These are some 3 shot groups by the time I was done dinking with the scope and settled into trying some last minute groups. I had put about 80 rds through it by the time I took these shots, was cold and tired (I've got more excuses if these aren't enough haha). I took a lot of shots just trying to get a feel for the scope and to see the results with adjusting it for elevation at different ranges, then finally settled in to see how tight I could shoot.

100 yds with Federal 168 gr SMK on a bag for a rest. There are a couple other holes but those are from sighting in. Honest.

It was only at 100 yds, nothing too impressive. I hope to do better next time out and I believe the rifle is capable of better. I'll try again fresh another day.

Well I think I can do better if I start out again fresh and more relaxed. I'll admit by the time I took these I was probably anticipating the recoil and that was affecting me. Only .308 but my shoulder was feeling it by the end.

Not finished.
I have -
The A4 Stock (Two thumb screws but I can't get a one thumb screw stock)
The DD ross Bottom Metal for A3 version.
The Badger ordnance Clip Lugged rail.
Bob Jury custom copied the Schneider specs for the barrel for me so I have that.
Badger USMC recoil lug.
Harris bipod

I need -
Correct rings (Will fit a 34mm main tube) plus SIMRAD cap
M24 Trigger (Using a Trigger tech at the mo)

It goes to Steve at EM Precision for clip slotting of the action and barrel / receiver work at the end of the week
Then it gets nitrided and final fit up and returned to me.

It's been a long process (started in 2016 to get the bits and bats)
