M40 Family - Who owns one?

Fitting the 16601 buttplate, I used a coarse file to rough out the shape and then a mill file to tune it in to match the wood. After that was done I used a piece of 100 gr sandpaper to eliminate the file marks on the aluminum. I wasn't too careful with this as I wasn't trying for a museum piece, going on the assumption that these were more utilitarian. Plus its an old buttplate that has more wear than finish. I'll post better pics after its all assembled if people want.

Two coats so far, I'm liking the color that is coming out in the old walnut.

Very nice. I currently have 40x rifles in 7.62, 6x47, 22-250 and 222. The herd fluctuates as i find others I can't live without, lol. Great rifles though. - dan

Well I'll beat this dead horse one more time, stock is finished and rifle is reassembled. Pretty happy with how it turned out. Its definitely darker in the areas where end grain is exposed but I'm ok with that, gives it a bit of a used look to it I guess. Mix of old and new parts, I think I can put this project to rest and let it get back to its proper place (in the back seat of my truck). I've been seeing coyotes everywhere the last week or so, and haven't had a rifle with me.

So Im currently starting to collect the parts to do my own M40A5 inspired build! Found the Mcmillan stock for $400, pacific tool and gauge magazine kit (so I can run AICS mags), a proof research M24 contour barrel, and a Triggertech Rem 700 Trigger. All this was purchased for just above cost (the joys of employee discounts). All I need now is the action.

I'm going to chamber it in either 6.5 Creedmoor or 6.5 PRC. Not sure which yet. The PRC would be more fun but the ammo is nonexistent right now and neither are the reloading supplies.

What I am looking for though is a muzzle brake that emulates the one from an M40A5

My inspired build has a PGW night vision bridge on it. But it’s a primer grey colour. Need advice. Krylon spray bomb OD or Cerekote? Thoughts?

Get a RimX and do it in .22lr

Your choice, as built they were left unfinished, if OD is your preferred colour I’m pretty content to spray bomb small parts as I can easily clean it off if I change my mind.

I'm even debating just leaving it unfinished. Will see. Thank you for the suggestions.

About the only things Im missing for my M40A5 build is a forward rail and the muzzle brake.

I wonder if PGW has any leftovers? I know they have essentially closed up shop, but the least batch of A5 stocked rifles they put out last year had some rails on them so who knows if the have a couple left over-might be worth an email

I don’t know of a similar looking brake to the SSAL/RE from Surefire, they still make them in small batches apparently but they are tough to get up here and even when they do show up south of us people are asking $300 USD for one. Maybe go A3 hybrid-everything else stays the same just no brake?

Edit: if you can get a SF Socom in 7.62 up here that’s kind of close in appearance

You’ve got me thinking about using my barreled action in a A6/A7 build instead and putting my A1 parts kit in the corner of the safe for now.
