M40 Family - Who owns one?

I sold that scope with the rifle but only because it was an MOA scope and I wanted an MRAD instead. So I might just buy the MRAD version to stick on this rifle. I'd like a Nightforce ATACS but don't really want to spend that money right now.

Yeah...its a big pill to swallow...i was looking at the 4-20 atacr but might end up going bushy dmr3 for my prs rifle

So if anyone remembers this was the start of me dipping my toe into the M40 pool.

My son ended up with this rifle, and has been hunting with it since he got it. He recently took the McMillan stock off and replaced it with an HS, so the stock is coming back to me.

Now I need to put together another rifle, I really like this stock. I know it's not military-correct, just really like it.

I have two .308 rifles already, my attempts at an M40 and an M40a1. Want to do something with this one, thinking medium range coyote rifle. Having moved out of the city into cattle country, the yotes are many. I have a .223 rifle that works for short range out to about 200 yds and several that can take care of anything at the outer reaches of my skill but I want to do this one as an intermediate rifle.

Should I go with another .223/5.56 (I have everything needed to just burn cheapo surplus to loading heavier bullets) or should I go with something like 22-250 or .224 valkyrie? I'd kinda like to go with the best blend of fast and stable, thinking 400 yds is my target range for this rifle.

My current .223 is not the most precise, but I won't stop using it at closer ranges, it's just too much fun. This new build would be an excuse to use this a5 stock, not that I'm really looking for justification.

I'm thinking .223 would be simplest, 1:8 24" barrel and then I'll look for good optic with a max of 16-20x with a simple mil dot reticle.

Open to suggestions/criticism.

Do a .223 or .223AI with a 26" barrel and push 75/77s fast. No prob getting 2900+fps with 75s out of a 26" barrel. If you use ELDMs instead of BTHPs you basically get 6.5 Creed ballistics out to about 600 yds.

tastefully done homage! which model of Leica scope is it?

Amplus6 3-18X44i in atrs low rings. The glass is very nice with enough elevation to dial past 1500m. On 3X the FOV is so wide you can see the barrel.

The rifle has an early 1980’s action, safety and trigger. BM is a Williams, barrel is 24” either Hawkhill or Krieger (can’t remember). Shoots like a hot damn.

Are you using a Badger Ordinance unit and is it a drop in?

Mine does not drop in, not even close.

Sorry are you asking me, and do you mean the scope base?

If so my scope base is a repro lugged Unertl, the rear lug is made larger on purpose so it can be hand fit to the clip slotted receiver. I actually used a 40x repeater on this one so the clip slots and thumb relief are Remington spec. Apparently this is the way PWS and Unertl designed the originals.

When I did my A5 it was the other way around, the action was machined to fit the 30 MOA scope base for both the lugs and having the rear receiver bridge milled flat.

Thanks for replying, yes I was referring to the base. I have a remington 40X with the clip slot and I picked up a Badger Ordinance M40 base. I didn't realize I have to hand fit it.

Good to know, thanks.

No problem, it sounds like you have one of the M40A3/A5 style lugged picatinny rails. Just double check the BO part number as they have made several over the years which require different work to install.

One was a short action, 20MOA rail which was lugged
Another was a clone of the 30MOA lugged base the USMC manufactured, which also need the rear bridge to be milled flat
And I think they made a 30MOA lugged mount that still used the factory radius on the rear bridge.

The spec USMC mount requires what some people call “lug slotting”, here’s a picture and you can see the machining on the rear bridge as well.

That looks great AG, it turned out really nice. I like the look of the longer 10 round magazine. Need to get a couple before PM twinkle socks gets his way.

I picked up a couple 10 rounders and a couple 5 round mags as well. Now Im just waiting for the scope to arrive.

Yup, it does need to be fitted and the rear pad milled flat. Mine looks to be the 2nd option, the clone.
