M48 Extraction/Ejection Issues

Hey guys,

New to the Mauser platform, picked up a M48 and took it to the range only to find that it wasn't extracting or ejecting properly... Just wanted to see if anyone else has had these problems and knows a fix. Took some pictures, figured one of the Mauser experts here might be able to spot the problem(s). I've done all the troubleshooting I can with my limited knowledge and extensive internet research, at my wits end with the thing!

I think the extractor tension is too high as the gun was working like a push feed, with the extractor not grabbing rounds from the magazine. Also, the bolt was incredibly hard to work with the extractor pushing hard against the inside of the receiver. I straightened it a bit, and it seems to be working better with empty brass (can't find 8mm snap caps), though it doesn't seem to be 100% with rounds on the ejector side of the magazine. Does it look like the extractor is still overly bent? Could it be a problem with the feed lips/ramp?

The ejector is not protruding enough into the receiver to even make contact with the cartridge. The blade doesn't look too be worn, though I guess it could of been re-blued... I took the ejector box apart to get the cosmo out and found that the leaf spring that pushes on the ejector blade was intact. Anything I could be doing wrong?

Any insight is greatly appreciated! If I have to send it to a gunsmith, is there anyone around the GTA you'd recommend for Mauser work?

Are you using surplus ammo such as Czeck surplus? it has a clear coat on the ammo and doesn't want to come out of my M48 as well. You could try different ammo to see if the result is the same.

Your rifle looks to be in great shape overall, however something still looks amiss with the ejector in the picture with the bolt in the receiver.
Does the bolt stop in the right spot and does the release work properly?

Was using brass cased new production ammo, Privi and S&B.

I'm pretty sure it's stopping where it should, the release does work properly.

I have an RC K98 that didn't extract or eject reliably when I got it. So I bought a new (surplus) ejector and extractor. Ensuring the ejector was longer than the one I had. Runs flawlessly now, have put down hundreds of rounds since.
