Will tape hold over magnaporting? Seems like a few thousand PSI would be in there till the bullet leaves the bbl.

The tape holds till you pull the trigger. The tape will be blown off long before the bullet exits. It just there to keep crap out. Once you fire you retape.
 
I have removed the open sights, which it did come with. I am wondering about what can be installed around the outside of the barrel to defeat the Magnaporting, so as to determine it's effects on recoil, muzzle rise and report.

I think I'll try some "heat shrink" tubing...then I can fire it with and with out the "wrap" and see the difference.
 
In my experience, a non-ported, 24", 375 is not be any louder than something like a non-ported, 24", 7mag or similar.

Magna-porting does a good job at controlling recoil and muzzle flip, but it IS loud. The good news is that you won't die from it ....... BUT if you don't consider those shooting next to you, they MAY bludgeon you to death with the rifle. :D

I wear ear protection for all shooting when shooting at the range. I don't see a big diff with the porting, but then I do alot of shooting by myself.

Why did you remove the sights? A .375 should keep irons on it, for aesthetics and for practical reasons. the recoil COULD kill a scope. Wouldn't want a big hunt to end because you took off the sights...
 
I removed the open sights because I liked the look better that way...good point though about the recoil possibly "killing" the scope. Perhap I should put them back on for "the hunt".

It now has a pre-fit Limbsaver pad on it...a perfect fit by the way.:)

I'm off to the range today to try it out with some Federal factory 300 grain JSP's...I'll post a scan of the targets tonight.

Any suggestions for "pet" loads for the .375 H&H?

I am just wondering if anyone here would care to share some of their favorite loads?

I kept the sight on my 375 H&H incase of a mishap or i just plain want to pretend i am in a lions lair in old Africa :runaway: .
I trust most good quality scopes and prefer to use a scope but i also shot over iron for many years so i am comfortable with that as a back up incase i happen to break or damage my scope.
In reality i will most likely never need iron sights but i will always want them on my 375 H&H mod 70 .

when it comes to your rifle do what you like best.

70 g of R15 +270g Hornady = 1"groups
 
Well, I tried it out today. :) This rifle is a real pussycat with that Limbsaver pad in place; when fired offhand. I found it a little uncomfortable firing from the bench, leaning into it however! With an extra cushion bewtween me and the buttstock though, I'll be able to comfortably shoot it all day long.

In any case, here is the way I got it to perform with Federal "Power Shok" 300 grain JSP loads today (3 shot group)...not bad for the first time out, I thought!

Not bad at all, but play around with RL 15 and seating depth and it won't be long before you're shooting groups half that size.

Now if only I could find a M70 _classic_ in that chambering...

Looks? iron sights look goofy on scoped rifles.

Redundancy? Use a proven scope.

If a scope is going to fail, especially on a big recoiler..I'ts gonna fail within the first 30 rounds or less.

If you practice with a scope at close range, you wil find that it is FASTER in target aqqusition than irons, too.

I agree with you...I just mounted my "old reliable" Leupold 2-7 Compact on this fine rifle. It looks beautiful. :)

I tried firing it today at the outdoor range without ear protection, and she's loud alright. :eek: I'm going to play around with a "sleeve" I can put on the barrel for hunting, and take off for range work.

A little trick to use at the bench is to pile the sandbags higher so you are sitting up straight behind the rifle instead of leaning into it. The leaves your upper torso alot less anchored and will roll back easier with the recoil.
