um not adding to any of the first hand experienced guys ammo choices here but how come no ones has asked how bad is bad? shotgun sized spread in my mind = 12" or more shouldn't this gun(or any other modern bolt rifle) shoot like say any ammo to 4" inches or something. I would suspect a bad scope or something. I just went through this with a rifled slug barrel two summers ago. spent enough on ammo to have bought a new scope, which the problem turned out to be. again no first hand 308 experience but i have never witnessed a modern bolt gun shoot 12" groups no matter what it ate.
then again if the op is a percision guy maybe shotgun sized groups are 3" inches
what do i know....
