M700 5r Milspec .308 what bullet weight?

um not adding to any of the first hand experienced guys ammo choices here but how come no ones has asked how bad is bad? shotgun sized spread in my mind = 12" or more shouldn't this gun(or any other modern bolt rifle) shoot like say any ammo to 4" inches or something. I would suspect a bad scope or something. I just went through this with a rifled slug barrel two summers ago. spent enough on ammo to have bought a new scope, which the problem turned out to be. again no first hand 308 experience but i have never witnessed a modern bolt gun shoot 12" groups no matter what it ate.

then again if the op is a percision guy maybe shotgun sized groups are 3" inches
what do i know....

Shotgun size spread I will admit is a bit of an exaggeration , it is shooting 3-4 inch inconsistent spread at 100 meters , should be less then an inch. Don't believe it is scope related but that will be checked as will different brand and weights of ammo next time out along with checking the torque on the action screws and such and I purchased a better shooting rest then we were using last time out

good luck, its frustrating as hell at times I am sure. As I stated greater minds then mine already spoke up i was just suprised no one else asked how bad it was actually shooting. not that three inch groups would be acceptable either. I have a 700 in 220 swift and I can get 1-2 inches on factory ammo shooting of a bipod. could likely be improved with handloading and a rest I am sure but it serves my needs as a hunting gun. I am sure the fellows that own one will sort you out.

Yeah I am hearing right around 180gr , just hoping to get it confirmed by someone who has owned or shot one with a bullet around that weight

Well the 5R was based off the M24 weapon system which uses 175gr M118LR. US snipers have used that catridge for years. There is a good write up on the 5R in Sniper Central. http://www.snipercentral.com/milspec5r.phtml

With the 1:11.2" I also would reccomend 168-175 gr Match ammo. As to your grouping sizes, could it be possible that you are flinching or perhaps having issues with mounts, etc.

Just bought the same rifle 2-3 months ago. using store bought federal serria match 175 this shoots under .5 moa at 100 yards. when the wind is willing it will place shots on a 10 inch gong at 1000 yards. I hear similar results for other people who have bought this rifle. I'm running an R5, one peice 20 MOA base, nightforce rings and a 5-22 NF scope. Unless you got a factory lemon, I would think if you do your part, The rifle will do its. Try some store bought match loads and see if you get a differance in group size. What i have found in my limited shoting experience was that my group sizes were effected by my imput not the rifles.

My research shows, 155 Lapua scenar is as good as it gets. Fast, High BC, great for all ranges. The combination works great and beats most other bullets in ballistics out past a mile because of the speed. I tried 220 SMK's once, but you can only get about 2200 fps so they are not worth it. The heavies are meant for magnum 30 cals

168 and 175 SMK are a good choice as well.

Just one opinion, take it as you want.

A friend of mine just set me up with some hand loads. This is so addictive. I'm using 175gr smk and 44 grains varget, norma brass and cci primer it's awesome true half moa at 100 really loving it. Mind you the 1/2 moa at 100 was a 5 shot group out of 200 rounds so the percentages aren't that great hahahaha... Mostly user error, who am I kidding definitely user error

This is what I got with 175gr SMKs

The 5R definitely likes 175gr bullets. I had similar results with 175gr Berger Target VLDs

My shooting partners 5R likes lapua brass, 175 smk's, cci br2 primers and 45.2 grains of varget. If your gonna try the load, work up to it.

@ceriksson, that is an incredible group - well done!

No only is it five shots into three-tenths of a minute (!!!), it is _also_ perfectly centred. Wow. Given a bunch of tries, I don't know if I could do this with my best .308 competition rifle. I know for sure that my average 5-shot group is bigger than this.

Is this an unmodified, factory rifle?

Thanks, it took me about 3 years to get that group..

I had the stock bedded and put on a new trigger, otherwise factory bbl and action

178 AMAX and Varget

I shoot the Hornady 178 Gr. AMAX (Moly Coated) as well, through a McPhee 26.5" AMTU contour barrel with a 1 in 11.3" twist.

My pet load is: (Use with Caution!!!)

- 178 Grs. Hornady AMAX - Moly Coated
- 44.5 grs. Varget
- Federal 210M primer
- Norma Match case
- Bullet seated to 2.800"
- Velocity - 2720 FPS.

Shot @ 300 meters - prone off Bipod.....

300meterGroup4-16-2007002.jpg

When I am doing my part this load has held 0.5 MOA out to 600 meters in competition.

Also try:

- 178 Grs. Hornady AMAX
- 43.0 Grs. H-BLC2
- Federal Match Primer
- Norma Match Case
- Bullet seated to 2.800"

I tend to stick with Varget due to it's consistency through the cold and heat.......

I can substitute the Sierra 175 Grs. bullet if needed and get pretty much the same results, but I find the 178 Grs. AMAX shoots just a wee bit tighter for me.
