Mag Limits in BC

Okay, so I am searching high and low through the regs and I can't seem to find whether there is a mag limit in BC. My friends are all telling me its 3 rounds. I am not so sure.

Any help?

Shotguns are 2+1 if you are using any form of either buck shot or smaller. if you are hunting deer and Bear with Slugs, you are allowed 4+1 for auto-loading shotguns and as much as a pump gun will hold.

Semi-auto center fire rifles are maximum of 5 rounds (unless you have a M-1 Garand), bolt, lever and pump action rifles are not limited to 5 rounds

FYI
Semi auto, centerfire rifle mags are limited to 5.
Pistol mags are limited to 10.

Can legally use a Pistol mag in a semi-auto rifle. If you don't beleive me, look up LAR pistol mags (probably a sticky in the black rifle section), and JR carbine rifles using Glock pistol mags.
Can legally hunt with these pistol mags in rifles in BC too.

Magazines designed or manufactured for both centrefire calibre semiautomatic rifles and other (non-semiautomatic) rifles

Magazines designed to contain centrefire cartridges and designed or manufactured for use in a semiautomatic rifle are limited to five cartridges. However, magazines designed to contain centrefire cartridges and designed or manufactured for use in a rifle other than a semiautomatic or automatic rifle, do not have a regulated capacity. Magazines that are designed or manufactured for use in both semiautomatic rifles and other (non-semiautomatic) rifles are subject to the semiautomatic rifle limit of five cartridges.

Example:
Remington model 7615 pump action rifle chambered for 223 Remington caliber:

the 10 round magazine is prohibited
the five round magazine is unregulated

Drillbit is talking about using 10 round pistol mags in a semi auto rifle. Perfectly legal for hunting and complies with federal magazine limit laws.

"Non-restricted rifles being used for hunting are limited to 5 round (with the exception of the M-1 Garand)"
"Slugs, you are allowed 4+1 for auto-loading shotguns"
Where do yo get your information from, can you provide some quotes or links? Before you give advice, you should study up a bit.

The original question was asking if there is a limit on rifle rounds when hunting in BC. There is not. There is only the Firearms Act rules for semi-auto centerfire rifle magazines limited to 5 (with the garand exception) and pistol magazines are limited to 10. A Pistol mag can be used legally in a rifle in Canada. Here's the Questar LAR quote off their website

"Questar's 10 Round LAR-15 'Pistol' Magazines fit all standard .223/5.56 AR Rifles and Pistols...

Classified by the RCMP as 'Pistol Magazines' they are manufactured exclusively for Questar by Ammunition Storage Components (ASC) using the same drawings, dies, etc. previously used by our last supplier, and are legal for use in BOTH AR Rifles AND AR Pistols." or anything that take an AR magazine.

And 4+1 in an autoloader shotgun, where does it say that anywhere? Semi-auto shotgun magazines cannot hold more than 5 of the longest shell they are designed to take. So, a 2.75" - 3.5" gun is limited to 5, 3.5" shells in the magazine. That's it, it cannot hold 6 3.5" shells in the Magazine. With that same gun, you can legally load 6 or 7, 2.75's in the magazine and another in the barrel. There's an RCMP letter about this too, I've posted it before.

Hope that gets you started.

It is staggering to see how truly ignorant so many firearm owners in Canada are about so many gun laws. I know they are convoluted and poorly written, but a thread about basic stuff like magazine capacities shouldn't have this much misinformation in it.

It is absolutely scary to see how many have passed the test to get there PAL and don't even know the laws...
What's even more scary is that some instructors are teacher students this garbage

didn't we just have this thread , but with some guy from ontario asking a similar question ....................

btw can my laser rifle use a 5 cell battery , or is it considered a shot gun ( and limited to 3 ) because the laser beam is made out of individual particals ?

All I can say is when I started hunting in Quebec Shotguns where goverened by the migratory bird regs which state that during that season max in shotgun was 3 one in chamber and two in the mag. at the same time I had a M1 and if I wanteted to carry it or use it as a back up had to find and buy 5 round clip for it. Now this was Quebec and I seem to recall NFLD was about the same. After migratory bird season it was different for the shotgun. I cannot recall what it said in BC or Alberta Been a while. but I do know if we followed the same rules in either we wouldn't run into trouble. I guess if I go back to hunting will have to read the rules again as they change from time to time

It is weird that you can use those pistol 10 round mags for hunting in a semi auto. When the law only allows 5 must because of the cartridge.I will just stick with my bolt guns..lol

Another one of these? Theere should be a mandatory read list of things before you have access to the forum. It would save not on the threads like this (I don't mind educating the uninitiated), but would alleviate all the crappy information that the ill-informed spout off about.

just flipped through the hunting regs no limit for center fire found, Firearms act defines mag limit by short firearm and long firearm and type of action and type of action and type of ammunition

they are
handgun mags -10
centerfire semi auto -5
manual action integeral mag no limit
rimfire no limit
(exemption for enfield allowing for 10 rounds in it's removable mag)
(centerfire exemption for Garand by name)
(there is also some exemptions for snail drum mags but I don't remember the specifics)
