Most AR will come with either a 1:7 or 1:9 barrel... both twist will work good with 55gr or 62gr bullets.

If you want my two cents worth, don't get too hung up on the details of the guns. Any AR currently offered in Canada can do good job in a SR match. It's much more of a "shooter's" game than a "gun" game... So just pick up the make/model that you like (and fit in your budget)

..

Shelldrake,

That's an interesting course of fire, I'll have to look at the schedule next summer!

The benelli MR1 is also non-restricted (so no extra course required)... and it accepts AR15 magazines

Canuck,

Ton45 here for the PQ perspective CTM Montreal section. We shoot with the ORA for SR matches. Since applying the new rules this 2010, the old "bring your ol'bolt gun and shoot with us" does not apply anymore. The new rules is very "operational" oriented. This means firearms that the fits the current military arsenal – AR15 platform or equivalent or an autoloading rifle design to have a capacity but limited to 5.

If you are curious with what is involved with these "new" service rifle matches you will first need to abandon the bolt gun and contact us for a rundown on what is involved.

exactly for this attitude not interested in shooting in Quebec
was speaking with William Martin the responsible at Cannaught for the SR section and I was more than welcome to shoot with my bolt action
and reading your 2010 rules bolt action are still allowed may be not the best but allowed....

canuck4570,

Yep, bolt guns are always allowed and welcome... as long as you're just shooting for fun (what most of us do anyway) and don't expect to bring home any trophy (unless they decide to make a special one for bolt gun) you'd be OK.

The "new" course of fire gives a clear advantage to semi-automatic rifle... and the more magazines you have the better... There isn't much time to thinker around between stages and targets.

Most guys are using some form of AR15, last years we had guys with their 10.5" shorty, guys with their run of the mill M4, and guys with their done-super-dooper race rifle... and most of us got our but kicked by army guys using their C7 and Elcan... so it's not so much the equipment... than the shooter pulling the trigger (and knowning the equipment they use)

As for the MR1, I don't know much about it... it's only been out about a year, but the review are pretty much all positive... as long as you don't like to "customize" your gun. Unlike an AR, there aren't that many aftermarket options for it. So what you see is what you get.

I wouldn't worry too much about barrel life, it comes with a chrome line 1:9 barrel, so for service rifle shoot you'll most likely be bored with the rifle before you wear it out.

yes this is my intention shoot with firts safety in mind and to have a good time with shooting buddy's
I have read the rules on the competitions and yes I realize that in some I wont even be able to shoot all the shot required in such a short time
but I will be going home after a competition or practice with good memory's of having fun shooting with a bunch of good guys
my shooting objective is not trophy but to beat myself
and who know that I might love it so much to buy a AR and even there trophy is not on my goal
thank you for the support

Hell, it's a bolt action... you said you need 80 shots, so make yourself a custom 80 round magazine... problem solved!:D
don't laf I though it was made by remington
found out after searching it was a Cie selling magazines
tell me if I am correct
its a model 700
with a McMillan stock
and equip with AI magazine
but I am telling you its great looking and it must shoot good also
my type of rifle.....

Yes, it's a Remington 700 with a new trigger guard assembly, built to accept AI (Accuracy International) magazines. (Badger, among others, makes a nice one).

The second picture shows the difference between their metal magazine (for 308 and the likes) versus their new polymer .223 specific magazine

If you want to be a little differente (and still use a bolt action rifle), there's also the "tube gun" stock options.
** you might want to keep your rifle as light as possible, since bipods are not allowed for SR match

This is a MAK kit, built in the US. They've been around for a number of years and are kind-of known among the LR community

And this is the 'new' MTD kit... Made in Canada... and should be shipping within the next few weeks/months

the tube gun is nice because I had a Steyr scout rifle not to long ago and shooting with the LER scope is to me great and the tube gun has a picatinny all the way
all these gun are superb but I have a sikness of being left handed
I shoot also right handed but my left is my strong one
will look up both option
I see that the guys in SR are not only friendly but helpfull
thanks Michel
