Our American Lake City Army Ammunition Plant uses magnum primers to light off the ball powder loaded in the .223/5.56 and .308/7.62 ammunition.
Ball powders are double base powders with more deterrent coatings than single base powders and are harder to ignite.
A magnum primer has a larger primer pellet that burns longer and slightly hotter than a standard primer.

Now read the link below and look at the primer photos, I use the Remington 7 1/2 primer to light off ball powders in my .223/5.56 just like Remington did when they ran Lake City.
