Id rather shoot my 458wm with rhino stoppers then shoot my 6lb 3oz sxs 12ga with 1 1/4 oz #4 loads.
I think its all marketing and while i do own magnums i still appreciate smaller cased rounds and my next magnum ill likely finish is a small magnum at that. The 416 taylor. I dont plan on hunting dangerous game with it but 350gr 416 diameter bullet at 2200 to 2400fps is plenty fine for moose. My 2 300wms are just boring. They will kill a moose dead and are likely a better choice then the 416t but life isnt ruled by need its driven by wants and i want a 416t and a couple 250 savages

There does seem to be a market shift. For example 338 federal. The small cased 6.5s. The creedmore is hardly half what the 264wm is. Efficiency seems to be a driving force as well. But we like what we like. Long slender cases to me are more appealing then a short fat one
I think anything that gets canadians buying guns is a good thing whether its a 22lr or 50bmg or a black ar15 or handgun or highend skeet gun

agreed about the ownership part...the big cals like 416 (which was supposedly developed due to needing more than 40 cal for very big game..rhino, elephant etc- a history thing of somekind) ..i dont know much about...and thanks

When I climb a mountain and sleep the night with grizzly bears around with the hopes of getting a shot at an elk the next day, I want to stack the odds in my favour. I'm not going to take a less capable cartridge than my 300 WM simply because I don't want to have to pass up on a shot and I might not get another chance. Same if I spend the money to go moose hunting out of province. Deer hunting is another story. Heck, I used my SKS once just for fun. And I will use my iron sight 9.3x62 some day for the same reason :).

Thank You.

My trapper neighbor swings by for a coffee and we were chatting about what hunters have for rifles these days, and he remembered me asking about the 458 Wilson. He sat back in his chair after sipping on his coffee and said, "the disease that the USA has has made it up in to Canada and its called Magnumitis." I asked WTH is that? He said it seems that no one these days can hunt these days unless its a magnum, bigger, faster, tenderizes instantly, blows the animal to bits. Not like the old days where a hunter had an odd-six or 30-30 and actually hunted. To lazy to get out of a vehicle, or walk down an animal...yeah the hunting is gone to Magnumitis.

I think he has a point.

Your trapper friend is partially correct. It dose not matter what cartridges are used today for hunting, however lack of hunting skills and laziness is common place. Extreme long range killing/shooting, baiting, scents, rattling antlers, decoys, tree stands, ground blinds, camouflage, a multitude of electronic devices, now drones. These are not hunting skills, they are aids to help the unskilled, who are to lazy to exercise the art of hunting.

Good old Track... rattling antlers are a tool of the unskilled??? Like calling waterfowl is for noobs and blinds are akin to hunting from your computer desk??? Get a grip, Track.

I COULD agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong

Check out when the 300WM, 338WM, 458WM, 358NM, 264WM, 7mmRM and all the Weatherby line-up was introduced and you will get a good picture of the golden age of magnumitis. Many of those don't seem to be quite as popular as they were. The short mags blipped about 20yrs ago but there seems to be lots of those on the used shelves these days as well.

People now are more inclined to buy an ultralight rifle which really doesn't work well in a magnum. The most popular chambering to blast off the shelves for the last 5 yrs is the puny 6.5CM. It's hardly a magnum.

Hmmm, you must be a Liberal, I guess the truth hurt's. It appears that you fit in just well with the unskilled, with the exception of your post count.;)

Laughing. What in the world?

Guys who have lots to say negative about magnums usually are the same guys who have never held or fired one. Make all kinds of ridiculous assumptions about those who do. So, basically your friend is stuck in his ways and is done learning and evolving. Because he likes 3006 and 3030, he is a superior hunter to me with my .44. Or 7mm. Crock of ####.

Chuck, plain old hunting skills is all what is required to hunt. Since the end of WW 2 sport hunting accelerated, and many, if not all, used old fashion hunting skills. Today, old fashion hunting skills are things of the past and replaced with gadgets that require no skill. I'll pay heed/homage to an old time trapper before today's wiz-bang tech hunter, or want-a-be hunter.

I guess you better give up your firearms for sticks and rocks, so you don’t get lumped in with all us lazy and unskilled “hunters”
