Don't you like opening a new package of happiness?
Sorry for the crap blackberry pic. It's all I have. Kind of
big too. I should have resized.

The 10 round LAR15 mags are great until you start shooting service rifle. If you want to be competitive you rest the mag on the ground when prone, your knee when sitting and kneeling. 5/30s also work with most military vests. Being big is the 30 round mags advantage.

Zombie protection goodness. Is this like a how many jelly beans in the jar contest? I guess 10 mags - I can see only 7 but I am sure you went with a nice round number...

How about 2 10 rnd LAR with coupler. Gets a little longer, just use one side of LAR to get 10 rnds and a longer overall mag.

What do you think about this feed lip cover from Marstar on coupled LAR15 mags?

If it were solid enough to monopod off, then you could get the benefit of 20 rounds on the gun without losing prone stability. I've only shot the old style (100 to 500m) SR matches 1 - 12 with 30 round mags pinned to 5, but some of the new SR matches (eg match 2-3 with 10 rounds in 10 seconds) look like they would benefit from 10 round mags. Just having one kind of mag to deal with for all stages seems like a good idea. They should carry well on a vest too since they are more or less the size of a 5/30 mag.

If you put a cover on over the bottom of the mag, you would have to remove this before you switched it over. And, if you wanted to use the "second" mag as a mono pod, you would have to put the cover back on it. This sounds like it would take a lot of time and require a third hand. Unless I am missing something.

You coupled the mags, but only use one. It's 30 rounds shape but holds 10 rounds. If you break one side, use the other.

Has anybody ever considered creating an extension so a 10rder could fit the 30rd pouch? That way you wouldn't be tying up a 10rd mag as a extension.

Scottm's post talked about having 20 rounds ready to go, so that would mean flipping the mag over, hence my concern/point.

Yes, I guess setting up one empty LAR would be let you use it as a mono pod but like other posters, seems like a waste of a mag. Unless LAR is going to start making 30 round length mags. Probably not very likely.:)

I haven't shot the new CFSAC course of fire. I am assuming in 2011 the new matches will be used. They are very different from matches 1-12 used previously. These old matches required mag changes after 5 rounds. The rapid stages still allowed 30 seconds and required a mag change. In addition, there was plenty of time to get set up for a match (loading mags etc). 5/30 round mags worked very well here.

If I understand the new matches correctly, you start with 226 rounds (52 + 50 +52 + 72). Things happen pretty fast and you stuff mags when you get a chance. The capacity of the coupled magazines would be a significant advantage. You could have 120 rounds loaded into 6 coupled magazines. If you wanted to have that many rounds ready to go in a 5/30 magazines, you would need 24 magazines on your body or in your pack. More likely you would have far fewer 5/30 round magazines (?10?) and need to dedicate quite a bit of reloading time and thought to be ready for the next series of fire.

There would be advantages when actually shooting the matches as well.

There are still some slow prone stages where 5/30 mags would be fine (eg match 1 serial 2), but many others with up to 20 rounds fired quickly from positions other than prone where having 2 coupled 10 rounders in the rifles would be an advantage. Setting up for these slow series would involve using a coupled magazine with the single cap left on. Other series of fire involve 10 rapid shots (eg match 2 serial 3. You could use a capped magazine and drain one LAR15 mag to complete the series with no magazine change. Still other series require 20 rounds fired fairly rapidly with movement (eg match 4 serial 4). For these you could start with no cap on the magazine and have quick access to 20 rounds with one simple flip of the magazine.

Again, this is all just hypothesising since I have no experience with the new matches. Perhaps time isn't as tight for reloading as I think. Perhaps messing with caps to set up is as much or more hassle than just using a bunch of 5/30 mags and swapping mags more often. That's why I asked Gunnerlove for his opinion. The 2009 Queens Medalist would likely have an informed opinion on the flow of these new matches and the possible utility of my suggested setup for a civilian competitor. Of course straight up unpinned 30 rounders would be best if you are legally able :)

I just took a look back through my notes and there are only three matches where I as a civilian would run LAR15 mags over 5/30s. Matches 1.7, 2.2 and 2.3. Everything else I would be running 5/30s. I shot most of CFSAC 2010 with 30s loaded with ten rounds. I like the finality of a locked back bolt. Run a 5 or 10 round mag until empty and you shot 5 or 10 rounds. I guess I don't like to count unless I have to.
