I've used a similar system as well. I think the last time was when I made an extension for use with chambering reamers.the one time I made a square socket, I drilled the end of a piece of 3/8 drill rod, then filed a slightly tapered square post with a blunt point on the end so that I could start it in the drill rod, then heated the drill rod red hot and hammered it over the square post.. Quite easy to do and more or less guarantees a square hole that is is square and is the right dimension
