I can barely walk right now.:D

Wasn't really planning on going moose hunting this year.
Decided to go and just relax for a few days. Call some moose, drink some tea, read a book, and nibble on some fig newton's. Ah, the good life.;)

Get where I was headed yesterday about 1300. Stop and have a bite to eat and figured why not let out a call?
Start reading a new book and at page 13 look up and see a moose about
200m away crossing a trail.
Ok, where's my gun? Leaning on the truck. Load it and go after the moose.
I'm walking down the trail and he's on the edge of the trees eyeballing me.
Binoculars up and there's a bush right in front of him. No shot.
I put my hands in the air and start rocking them back and forth while I keep walking towards him. C'mon moose, take one step out!
Hey if it works for Jim Shockey?:p
So I get about 100m away and he hasn't moved. I work into the trees to circle around and about 10 minutes later I come out where I think he was and no moose.
I start walking back on the trail letting out the odd bull grunt. Still no moose.
I get halfway back to my truck and he grunts. He's about 75m in the bush and angling away.
Try a cow call and he's still headed away.
Double time down the trail and I come to a more open area. I hear the bull raking the trees and see some of the willow tops moving.
I let out my best ever bull grunt.........now he's coming towards me.
He's about 20m away and he hangs up. All I can see is one antler.
I try a quiet bull grunt and nothing, he won't take that last step out.
Standoff for about 2 minutes or so.
Now he's grunting and walking away from me again!:p
I grab a branch and start raking the willows like mad and let out a bull grunt.
Now he's turning around and grunting like crazy.
The moose is going to hear my heart pounding in my chest.
I'm behind 2 trees and now I can see him.
2 more steps and he'll be in the clear. I come out from behind the tree and raise the rifle up. The moose is about 15m away now.
I HAVE NEVER SEEN A MOOSE MOVE SO FAST IN MY LIFE!!!
I run about 10m to my right and the moose is standing in an open area looking back at where I was.
One shot with the 416 and he runs about 50m and stops.
Wobbly legs and then he falls over.

So being by myself I start working on the moose. About 4.5-5 hours later he's all cut up and laid out to cool overnight.
This morning start hauling moose pieces to the truck.
8 trips took me about 3 hours.

Did I mention the ribs cutting my ear open while hauling them out? Or the tine that scratched my back when I dropped the head?

I think I'm going to find a hunting partner next year who's strong of back and weak of mind!!

Great story! Congrats! Gotta love the adrenaline rush hey! That's what keeps us going back for more year after year!

Awesome lookin bull man!!! Great pics!!

I am headed out on Tuesday to find myself a bull, just for a day trip by myself. Half of me is hoping I dont see any shooters until I have a buddy or two with me!

Good job!

These are handy to have but hard to find :). You have to find a guy with a weak mind for sure cause most smart guys know your friggen crazy to be doing s**t like this :D

great read and congrats on the fine bull. have packed a few moose out, at least you know the beer will taste extra fine when you're done. oh, and the handfulls of advil you'll consume over the next few days :p

I felt like I was reading a best selling thriller! Thanks for the story and pics. I am an armchair hunter. Never got anything yet. Looking forward to a hunt someday. Hey I have a very strong back but I think you live too far away! :p
