Man dies after struggle with deer

By QMI Agency

An Indiana man died Monday after tussling with a deer he thought he'd shot and killed.

Paul J. Smith, 62, was hunting deer at Chain O'Lakes Monday and called his son shortly after 9 a.m. to say he'd shot a buck, the state department of natural resources said.

When his son returned the call at about 10:30 a.m., Smith said that when he'd descended from his tree stand to dress and tag the deer, he quickly discovered that it was still alive, natural resources said. Smith told his son he struggled with the deer before killing it with a knife.

About two hours later, a park employee found Smith unconscious, slumped against a tree. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. The autopsy revealed lacerations on his liver in line with internal bruising, natural resources said.

Oh well. Good for the deer, bad for the hunter. Can't expect everything to roll over and die, I'd fight back like a wolverine. A lesson to other hunters, be carefull.
+1.

I had to put one down with a knife. Not fun, or easy, and in retrospect, I don't think I could have done anything different save for kicking some bone headed hunting partners in the junk at the start of the day.

What does it mean when I read this article, and instantly think "Hey, this would make a great CSI or NCIS episode!" ... blame son, blame other hunters, poachers, etc.. Then find Deer body nearby and realize the Deer did it.

No making light of the situation at all - Condolences to his family. Just a thought that crossed my mind as I read the article.

Means you need to hunt more and watch less tv.

The one time I had to cut a bucks throat, I had shot the deer at last light & it fell over but got up & took off. Took me 1.5 hours of tracking to catch up with it. BUT, I had gone back to my vehicle to put the rifle away as the law says NO uncased guns after last light... So, there I was with a wounded buck & only a knife... I so wished for my pistol as a round to the head at close range would have saved me the grief of going hands on...

Cheers
Jay

Why bring a knife to a gun fight, especially if you have a gun?

Wow, what a sad story. A friend once told me that taking on a game animal is like fighting a mixed martial arts master that is equipped with brass knuckles on his hands and feet and is wielding bow staff. Good luck in close contact combat, I use a gun thanks.
