Manitoba Chickens

Manitoba grouse

I had the pleasure of shooting grouse last week north of The Pas, with my young lab we got into lots of ruffies. Passed up lots of spruce grouse and even found some sharptails. Truly an amazing grouse hunting experience. Can't wait to do it again next season. FS

Ruff grouse numbers are lower this season on my favorite stomping grounds. Once a good frost takes some leaves off I'm sure things will pick up a bit.

As for sharptail (aka chicken) I have not encountered good numbers since the 1980's.

Well, went out For Deer with Russ One Buck that knew we were there long before we heard him:redface:
have to get some Tree stands up there:(
We spent about 30 minutes grouse hunting
Sorry Kevin:D J/K

Ruffie numbers north-east of Edmonton are the best I've seen in several years. We're finding ruffies in the "traditional" areas, as well as in areas where they are seldom seen.

Sharptail, however, are down compared to the last couple of years. This isn't to say that they are really low, but they seem a bit low compared to what we've seen in recent years. The year before last was the best I've ever seen for sharptail.

We've been getting out into the field pretty much every weekend. And, we set aside an entire week specifically for grouse hunting. All year, so far, there's only been 1 day when everybody got skunked. The wind was howling like mad that day, so it was no big surprise.

Overall, I'd say we're seeing an average year in our neck of the woods - not a banner year by any account, but not the worst on record, either.

I just about ran over a flock of 'em on a gravel road south of the #2 yesterday. I need to bring guns with me when I go out. I also had a coyote come within 50 yards of me yesterday when I was hanging a stand, no gun!!

Here's my story for opening weekend. Talked to the landowner and recieved permission to hunt and he said that no one else would be there and that my son and lab and I were the only ones he would give permission to. Exclusive rights to prime chicken territory, how sweet.

Well all good things have a down side right, well after waiting all week and going to the field Saturday morning about 11:00, there was not one carload, but two carloads of trespassing slob hunters from Rivers, Mb. trespassing all over the place. When I told them that we were the only ones the farmer was giving permission to they said that they live in town and that it was OK to go anywhere because they were from around there.

F@#CKING LOCAL TRESPASSING B@ST@RDS, I would have rather that they got mouthy and we could have settled things right there. What a way to screw up a day.

Anyways after we ran them off, they wanted to avoid a confrontation rather than be reported to Manitoba Conservation so we finished off the last 1/2 of the field and shot 3 sharpies and 2 huns.
your not to bright wanting to fight 2 car loads of guys with guns , i sure hope you grow up one day . and everyone has permission on that land . why don't you come down to the tempo on friday night and shoot your beak off . i live in rivers and huint by the rules .

Ginger is watching you......

Ginger is on the lookout for chicken and trolls, she found a couple limits of birds and I think she alraedy knows who the troll is, she will probably bite him hard when we go hunting for RICHARDS sons ground squirrels.

taffman good job your almost as good a hunter as a guy i work with , he once shot 2 deer at 234 yrds with one shot of his muzzle loader he is also the best fisherman from shore in manitoba.

A good hunter does not shoot 2 deer with the same shot! Know your target and beyond. This was a careless shot.

And wtf does fishing from shore have anything to do with this thread????

Unless your trolling, hmmm did I just write that?
