sorry about the low photo quality.
MS005a.jpg

marked on receiver "Made in Austria Patent Mannlicher Schoenauer M.1910"

marked on side "OESTERR. WAFFENFABR.-GES. STEYR"

also marked "FOREIGN" and "NOT ENGLISH MAKE"

marked on the barrel "Supplied by - COGSWELL & HARRISON LTD 166 PICCADILLY. LONDON. W.I."

no proof loads are shown. proof marks are: stylised "NPV", "crown over CP", "crown over V" and what looks like an austrian eagle.

the rifle is a takedown. it requires the forend screw to be removed, then there is a button on the magazine floorplate that is depress and the floorplate rotated 90 degrees and the mag assembly removed. then there is a switch at the front of the trigger guard that is moved to the right and the barreled action can then be removed from the stock.

it has a fixed standing rear sight with no stamping on it as well as a folding leaf stamped "300". it also has a folding tang sight inlet into the wrist.

serial number is a little over 10000. any ideas as to when it was made? i have contacted cogswell and harrison to find out if they have any info on the rifle, they asked for the SN and have not gotten back to me since.

i have 21 DWM cartridges for it (DWM 531), sadly the original box did not come with them.

one of these years i hope to point it at an elk or a moose or maybe even a bear.

rifles are not made like this anymore. the faces of the sight leafs are checkered and the trigger guard screw is not only indexed, but the head is contoured as well to match. as well as the tang sight that is inlet into the stock.

anyways, a neat old rifle that i wish could tell me where it has been.

Cartridges can be made easily enough. I think the round was also known as the .375 Nitro. Have some handloaded cartridges in the caliber around here somewhere. Should be a superb hunting rifle, although recoil is going to be noticeable.

ballistics are supposed to be on the order of a 270 grain bullet around 2200fps. quite a handfull in such a light rifle.

dies are available in the US but i never seem to get around to ordering them.

IIRC the cartridges that I have were formed from Norma 8x57 cases. A friend had the MS. He said it felt as if the rifle was backing off the bullet.

in edison marshall's book "heart of the hunter" he talks about his 9.5 mannlicher that he dislikes a great deal (apparently due to the recoil), he then goes on to use a 405 winchester model 1895 (which certainly has a reputation for recoil) without any complaint. and later in the book he uses a 404 and a 470 again without mentioning the recoil. in fact, he comes to regard the 404 as a small rifle (when hunting tiger).

Nice!!

What a classy rifle. Is it a recent addition to your collection?

i bought it around 6 or 7 years ago. i am a little ashamed that i have not got it up and running by now.

The MS rifles tend to be slender, lightweight rifles, not stocked in a manner that eases recoil. They certainly are classics, though.

I had a 1910,full stock,it looked beautiful shot < than 1" groups and KICKED LIKE A F***ING MULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Isold it to another M-S collector. Ps still have bunch of new unprimed brass I keep taking to gunshows and nobody likes it. JITC

What caliber was it?

I've owned three Mannlicher-Shoenauers; a M1903 in 6.5x54MS and 2 M1908's in 8x56 MS

REALLY COOL!!:dancingbanana: :dancingbanana:
Takedowns aree something special.
Old badger has a very light 9.3X57 Mauser that kicks like crazy.
We pulled a factory bullet , and it was a round nose , 248 grain bullet with a full boatload of some type of powder similer to H414.

Jason, you simply must get this classic up and running. Just wear an extra layer to the range for sight in! lol

I've only hit one animal with my 9,3x57 so far but boy did it hit with authourity!

Very nice addition to your collection!

I owned the same rifle for a number of years and it was a fine shooter. I nver hunted with it, and always felt badly about that.

Two years ago, a school teacher here inherited one form his grandad. It had a nice Zeiss scope on it, as well. someone told him i might be able to help him with ammo and he contacted me.

I had sold the dies with the rifle, but we ordered a new set for him from C-H. The sizer with two expander balls, one tapered from 8mm to 375 for making 9.5 out of 8X57 brass.

Needless to say he was in business the first day we got the dies, and used the rifle hunting that fall.

A buddy has one in 6.5 and he says that though the action is slick as butter, that it has a wandering zero and that after three or four shots at the range, it shoots all over the map.

I guess if he was to hunt with it he'd have to make the first shot count.

I had the opportunity to handle one.
Does the pistol grip unscrew to get to the second front sight?
do you have all the spare cartridges in the stock?

the one I've seen was a wonder... I do not recall the calibre, but the forend was repaired.... other than that.... beautiful. One shoud feel special for just handling them, nevermind hunting....

when i have some good light i will take some better photos, the one i posted does not do it justice, the wood on the other side is very nice. i think it has been around as there are old dings on the stock. i wonder if it made it to africa or india?

eltorro, i will check on the spare front sight, it does have 2 compartments in the buttstock for spare cartridges and a larger one for cleaning gear???

noel, it has been my intention for quite a while to get it up and running (but, the road to hell is paved with good intentions). i have even bought bullets (hornady 270 grain and nosler 260 grain) and 8x57 brass that i ended up loading for the 21H. but have never ordered dies.

anybody know how to date these by serial number? this one is a little over 10,000.
