Mannlichers....

Not a bad looking rifle. It's a shame the sights are not with the rifle. Be hard to replace with originals.

I kick myself for not buying one of those Remington Model Seven MS in 35 Remington. <dumb>
Trying to remember my CF2, and I could be wrong but they were nothing fancy, and I stand to be corrected but want to say williams or the like. So should be an easy replacement if you want, or better yet... quarter rib rear.

I remember one I had in 30-06...bought cheap when they were dumping them in the mid-80s...as I recall they just had Williams sights...which I replaced with a peep...so should be easy to replace...or do better.

I'm curious about the action on that M-S M72. Does it have rear locking lugs like the Steyr Mannlichers that followed it? The bolt sleeve looks somewhat similar to that on the later S-Ms. This "Mannlicher" must have had a very short life.
It's an oddball...I've only had one...I think it was 30-06...didn't like it much...especially didn't like the safety.

Read about it here: https://www.mannlicher.org/mannlicher-m72.html1.jpg

Forward multi lugged with mauser M98 style ejector and CRF extractor .. nice pic at this link https://www.m14forum.com/threads/mannlicher-schoenauer-m72.525626/

Dont be too concerned about the 'rear lugged' SL, M, S series ... vs front lugged actions - there are advantages and disadvantages to either style of lockup ... both are able to shoot very well and both will handle reasonable pressures as the rear lockers were also chambered in 6.5x68, 8x68S and 5.6x57 etc so they are certainly adequate.

The main disadvantage of rear-locking actions is that they permit more case stretching on firing than do front-locking actions. For a non-reloader, this is not a problem, but for the reloader, rear-lockers are a headache. With the case stretch on firing followed by full-length resizing, it doesn't take many
fire/full-length resize cycles to encounter case head separation. Neck resizing is only a partial solution because with the case stretching on firing, it doesn't take more than a couple of cycles before the cases won't chamber. Believe me, I know from years of experience. I've owned a number of Schultz & Larsens and Sauer 80's and 90s all with rear-locking bolts, and case life with them all was very short.

Well, the old 6.5X54 came back to me the other day!
Years ago I shot a white tail with it, then traded/sold it to a good friend of mine, and sort of regretted it since LOL
He killed three with it , but being a south paw it never did suit him too well.
so long story short, I traded him another equally classy rifle ( late 40's M70 in '06) that he shoots well, and got the little carbine back.
Instead of the 139's though , I loaded a bunch of 160's for it and took it out yesterday.
It is a " minute of White tail " gun out to 200 but the front post covers most of a 26" target at that distance, but the majority of the animals we kill in our favorite area are inside of 100 anyway .
At those ranges even the 160's plodding along are absolute death to any moose or deer!
We haven't added to
the 20 talley marks on the stock however ! LOL
