Mannlichers....

re: "This seems to have become a "Full Stock" thread, rather than a Mannlicher thread."

For myself, I think all full-stock and/or actual Mannlicher manufactured rifles whether full-stock or not are welcome here...they all show that your heart is in the right place, in the Central European hunting tradition.

I have often thought of picking up a Ruger #1 International but as yet have not found the right calibre and am also a little put off by reports of poor accuracy without a lot of messing around with the fore-stock. What is your experience in shooting these rifles?

I have read many reports of poor accuracy, but have never experienced it... I thought that I had run into a "bad" one with my .243 RSI when it did very poorly when ladder testing loads... until I ran a full box of Winchester Super-X factory ammo through it... and discovered that it had put all 20 in the one inch bull @ 100 yards... turned out to be another shooter. IMO, much of what you read online is regurgitated data, from regurgitated data, from regurgitated data... etc... and not first hand reports.

I've had three Ruger No. 1's, the last of which was a varmint/heavy barreled .22-250 which my son in the B.C. central interior now has. I did have a little trouble getting what I considered acceptable accuracy out of it. I have an article scanned and with the application of some of the info from it,:)there was a considerable improvement in accuracy. The article is
The Ruger No. 1
Shooting and tuning
- by Ross Seyfried

and it's from a past issue of the magazine, Rifle.
If anyone's interested, PM me your e-mail address and I'll send it on.

I read that article. Its one of several I read that made me think it took too much work to get them to shoot....especially when you add to the equation the possible contact of a fullstock. BUt if I could find a fullstock No. 1 in .303 British I might be tempted.

That beast is rare! Apparently to the tune of only 17 made.

Hi Rob, actually the classic has been discontinued. They are now in July of this year will start sending out from the factory near Styr ( I remember pulling up to that factory with my Alberta plated motorbike a few years ago ) in July of this year.
The SM 12 is the new model. Full stock is a special order from the factory.
They have put a rear safety on the tang similar to my Blaser K95. You can de #### at any time. Can't wait to try the set trigger.

Sure happy to see a thread like this of nice quality and photos.

care to share who you ordered it through and rough price?

I priced out a Steyr CLII SX light a little while ago and then recently went to place the order and the price had gone up over $600 with no explanation.

The SM12 reset action is interesting, but I can see it being annoying

another good advertisement

Just a note Brian is that the Canadian dollar over the last year has done very well against the Euro.

Time to go for the European makers in this case instead of loosing so much against the US based manufacturers.

It's not going to get any better for a long time with the way the new reality of medium term and longer term oil price dynamics worldwide.

Quality and style of the European makers is very refined to my personal liking.

I agree, but that price increase makes me wonder as it was earlier this year I was quoted over $600 less and our dollar had already taken a dive at that point. (which should not matter because as you say the Euro has tanked the same)

same, I am considering sauer and other euro brands since the $600 increase makes the steyr in that price range

I like the above statement because I'm originally from Alberta, I also ride bikes (right now a pair of Triumphs), my grandmother was from Steyr (from a family of gunsmiths), and I do some European travelling.

But I still think this thread needs more photos!

So how about this rifle?...its not mine, but another fellow on gunnutz owns it. Its an Austrian maker, Franz Neuber & son, 1923, in 8x57S with an unusual "Mannlicher" stock, carved to look like it has a cleaning rod.

Styr was a very nice area. In fact between the countries in Europe I have ridden through being France, Germany, Czech, Austria, Romania, Italy I found the countryside in Austria as well as motorcycle respect from vehicles to be the best in Austria and Bavaria.
The nicer sight is to go to Bad Ischl to see those rifles the Emperor used to use that came from Ferlach. Wow!!
You gotta love the Austrian lifestyle spas and all. One day I will go to Ferlach. Just to see the showrooms and drool.
