Mare's leg for hunting ?

Just out of curiosity, I grabbed my 16" Rossi in .45 Colt and held it up to aim with my arms extended. No problem getting a sight picture and I would have no qualms useing a Mares leg version in this way. Knowing how little recoil is produced from the 250 gr load travelling at approximately 1000fps I would feel perfectly safe shooting this way. If loaded hot it could become an issue but I suspect that could be overcome with practice.

For the price they should come with two stocks, a full and a cut-down.

I'd be more tempted to buy a trapper and shorten the stock if I wanted a compact package unless the Mare's leg comes in at a max of around $800 shipped...

Rossi is expected to release a model this summer called the "Ranch Hand". MSRP of $536. This might be what Kodiak Outpost is bringing in.

Seriously man, give it a rest...

I can hit a 75 yard 10" gong or pie plate with "most" of my handguns consistently 5-6 out of 6 shots off of a bench(remember, I said most). I don't practice all the time and I don't shoot competitively.

All it takes is time and practice and I am sure the same could be done with the "Mares Leg" and still come home with all of your teeth...

Some people seem terribly allergic to posting anything that remotely resembles actual experience. But you knew that.:D

We're bringing in the Puma Bounty hunter. These aren't cheap guns, but we did purchase them when the dollar was good and we are prepared to take a very slim markup on them. That is why we can offer them under the US MRSP. Don't expect $800 though. Our cost on them is way, way over that. As I mentioned earlier, I expect they will be nice and I'm looking forward to seeing them.

That rossi looks interesting. I will look for them in the future. But like everything in Canada, I wouldn't hold your breath waiting...

I think I will hold my breath or at least wait for the Ranchhand....

Short .44s and .45s in leverguns make great short range guns, but you need some way to aim them if necessary, so buy one with a proper buttstock and forget about Hollywood. If you are only gonna' use it for target shooting and playing around, grab one. It's funny that in the movies many times they would put 45/70 shells in the belt, just for visual effect.

If the Ranch Hand arrives up north I've got a full stock just waiting to be installed.
They are sold in the US as Pistols because of their silly laws but in Canada with a full stock in .45colt it would be a good back packing gun.

Thanks for the reply. While I love the finish quality of the Italian rifle, I am very happy with the functionality and looks of my two Rossi's in stainless steel. A 16" .45 and 20" .44. For me, the idea of a discreet, legal, short barreled lever that I can keep with me when I'm out in the bush on my quad is perfect. I hope that you or one of our other site sponsors will be able to bring some in. Preferably in stainless.

As the OP stated he wanted something that he could use for handgun style hunting. Our options are VERY limited but I think the mares leg is a niffty alternative given our restrictions. I have a trapper in .45Colt I've shot single handed with stout loads, shooting the mares leg like a pistol won't be an issue, neither will smashing his teeth out in the process. Recoil is controlable and accurate hits out to 100yd easily doable with practice, maybe a peep rear sight would help too. Go for it, sounds like a good solution to our no handgun hunting laws.

Yes, I think it could be an interesting alternative. Could also be a good trick-out gun with a small retactable stock still allowing carry on the belt or back. Just a fun gun to carry even if not hunting. Fishing,RV,truck gun...

Alas 1600$ for a take-down is way beaucoup cash.

correct me if i'm wrong on this .

puma is a importer of various rifles , including ones built on the 1892 winchester action .

puma was importing rossi's and putting " puma " on them ( ie rossi puma , or vice versa )

puma is now importing their 1892's from a italian comapany " chiappa"

it apears that the chiappa rifles are only chambered in low pressure rounds , where the rossi rifles have actions designed to take the high chamber pressure of the 454 casull round .

it also apears that the rossi " mares leg " ( ranch hand ) is close to 1/3 the price of the chiappa version .

so the million dollar question is ..............

who is bringing the rossi rifles into canada ?
