I purchased a Henry Mares Leg in .22, very satisfied, very neat and original. However, after the novelty wares off, and you actually want to shoot it, an inherent weakness shows up. The factory stock (butt end) does not lend itself to stable shooting. After trying various holding techniques, I decided the only way was to attach a stock extension. I wanted to do this in a way which caused little or no modification to the original stock. The answer was a Lee Valley "hanger bolt threaded insert. It was flush mounted into the butt end, and accepts a 1/4-20 threaded rod. Here are the pics of the finished project:

Very nice. I handled one in the store and wondered too how one would shoot it... IMHO these things should ship with an extension similar to what you've made. Good job.

Cool idea and well executed for sure, but your post only confirms my opinion that such a gun is practically useless in every way!

The larger caliber models being brought in would only be worse dealing with recoil and muzzle rise, anx only serve as a novelty.

Definitely not gonna take the place of the good old Marlin 30-30.

No real skills, just a high tolerance for boredom, a table saw to do the rough cuts, a belt sander to refine the shape, and then a block sander to do the finishing plus about 12 coats of tru-oil, sanding in between coats. A drill press really helps aligning the holes.
Cheers

That was my first thought, but Henry does not sell to non-US individuals. They suggested I contact a dealer, and order through them. I tried that, e-mailed the Canadian Henry dealer where I bought the gun with my request, and never heard back ! So I figured to hell with it, and built my own. Maybe they mislaid my request, or just ignored it, whatever, but a reply would have been a nice gesture. Needless to say I now shop elsewhere.

Wondered how long it would take before someone found out, they don't shoot so good.lol

Have you tried one?

Obviously it would require practice but of all the mare's leg's the .22's would have to be the easiest to shoot due to the minimal recoil.

I'd guess cans at 50 yards would be pretty easy with a red dot sight and offhand shooting, but I haven't tried one yet.....

The beauty of these guns in Canada is they are nice and compact and we can put a full stock on without taxes like in the States....:dancingbanana:

With no extension, is it possible fire the rifle from the shoulder, even from an unnatural position?

Maybe but I'd guess it would feel better cradled in your weak arm with your weak hand wrapped around the butt.

Something like this,
