Marine shotguns

I don’t have a specific reference, I just know it like I know thousands of other random facts, also I’ve handled and shot a stainless steel barrelled 1200 and had extensive talks with the owner of it, who has a shotgun collection worthy of a museum, with the knowledge to go with it. The information is out there if you’re willing to take the time and effort to dig it up.

Unfortunately, there were issues with that coating. It either held moisture, or the metal was not being prepared properly for treatment. Rust spots would come thru while sitting on a display wall. Remington at the time blamed consumers. Anecdotal.

Thanks for the heads up --- I've only seen one of the 870 XCS for sale on the EE, so unfortunately, my chance to own one is pretty low, but if I do see one, I'll take note to inspect the finish.

I have a Remington 700 XCR II in stainless finished in a black PVD coating, which I've been really happy with on the west coast, so it's too bad the XCS mightn't be quite up to the same job.

^Sorry, my reply a couple posts up could have been more helpful :p

I learned it from talking to a local collector who was very knowledgeable and experienced. I would consider him to be a sort of living reference. Some of the old pre-internet info never got digitally archived or uploaded, so it just isn’t available online. It’s likely in Winchester’s nonpublic archives, maybe books or documents that haven’t yet been digitized like those great ads Blatt posted, and the recollections / accounts of the few remaining industry people who were there.

For example, I once had a question about my Ithaca 37 DSPS and the answer was nowhere to be found online. I ended up phoning a semi-retired gunsmith in NY state who worked at the factory in Ithaca, then later King Ferry, NY. He answered my question right away and with as much authority as any book.

Across all industries, when an experienced old timer dies, some amount of knowledge goes with him.

Anyway on your behalf I looked, but couldn’t find a proper reference. The consolation is I did find a posted comment on a US gun forum that corroborates what I said. Given that it’s an anonymous unvetted source, you’ll have to judge for yourself how much value to place on the info — you know the saying: “Exactly what you paid for it…!” :d

^ much appreciated Barrett. Like you, I have handled these (own them), and have literally scoured the internet for a number of years gathering specifics. It's quite an enjoyable endeavor and hobby for me. I have found accounts similar to yours but after more digging, I am always left questioning because so many old timers seem convinced of conflicting information. This is just something I've noticed over years....and have even fell trap to myself...
