Marksmen issued better rifles in Afghanistan

I never knew a round like that existed. Thanks M for the learned stuff but don't expect me to remember the spelling. :)

Blahahahaha... well said!

Yes, the Eargesplitten Lautenboomer is quite the cartridge. Did you know that if you shot one straight up, you could hit the International Space Station?

True story!

Say it ain't so. I sure hope they never seen this from Berger Bullets;

Dare I say ".308 vs. 7.62mm".....?.....

Civilian version manufactured by Fulton Armory, seen here:

Does anyone know if these have ever been available / imported to Canada?

M14 Mk 14 Mod 0 Enhanced Battle Rifle....gotta have it. I hope these are available to us. Oh, additional question for the informed. To be Non-restricted, does the barrel length have to be AT LEAST 18.5 inches, or does it have to EXCEED that length (ie, must be 18.6 or longer). They also sell this rifle with a 22" barrel option.

Interesting but not to hi-jack the thread but what if anything are the Canadians using along those lines,or are they just making do with what they have?

Parker-Hale .308 sniper rifles (and they were .308s not 7.62s) are effectively history.

AR-10 has been purchased in limited quantities as a marksman's rifle.

.338 Lapua Mag is now the standard sniper round fired from the C14 (bolt action made in Winnipeg), with .50 BMG MacMillan C15 available as needed.

Man, what a good read and great thread.

Now, how do I get a couple of my M4 furniture compatable CQBR composite stocks with understock rail and a troy or KAC type battle rail.
... Over to afganistan for them to try on an m14 :D would shave lbs off the rifle which means more ammo in the pocket :)

I was reading they are going to a 300 Winchester Magnum in a bolt gun to make up for the gap between the .308 and the .50 caliber.

Sadly that romour has been around since the Army adopted the M24 rifles as it was a original specification that SOCOM wanted to be able to convert the rifles to 300 Win Mag hence the long action instead of the short action M40 the Marines were using since Vietnam. The Regular Army got involved and wanted it in 308Win instead, and the rest is history. SOCOM went with the 338 Laupa with time and the Army as far as I know never had a regular issued 300 Win Mag as only the AMU handloads the stuff.

Or there is the Mk13 Mod 5 rifles the Navy has which is in 300 Win Mag but nothing I can find for the Regular Army.

You can however buy a M24 in 300 Win Mag however from Remington.

Hi Dimitri,
here is some newer information on the 300 WSM.

"June 18, 2009: The U.S. Army has ordered 38.4 million rounds of .300 Winchester magnum ammunition for its newly modified M-24 sniper rifles, as well as similar SOCOMs Mk13 models. The new ammo will cost about $1.30 per round. The .300 Winchester magnum will be ordered in minimum lots of 56,160 rounds (117 boxes of 480 rounds each). The entire 38.4 million rounds will last a while."

"D.E. Watters of The Gun Zone adds that .300 Win Mag is used in the Mk13 sniper rifle, another Remington 700 long receiver derivative that’s assembled from parts at NSWC Crane. The most recent version is the Mk13 MOD 5, which allows the use of the same sound suppressor as the Knight’s Armament Company SR-25/MK11 sniper rifle."

Got to get tested by a branch of the military and be awarded an NSN number be for being approved for any combat zone deployment.
...
Athough if it was made from an USGI stock it might already be approved?

Yes I mentioned the Mk13 Mod 5 as you can see, and the US DoD did order the ammunition. And the Army issued a solicitation to convert some M24 rifles to 300 Win Mag back in Spring 2009, however they have not actually issued a contract for that work yet.

However the work has not actually been done, hence still no regular issued rifles for the Army. Unless I am missing something.

That is why I said going to not had gone to in your post (#31) and my post #4 where you quoted me. They are in the process of switching so I think you might have misread.

I'm just saying Brent, over all its been talked about a lot for a very long time, and although they bought a bunch of ammunition, I am still skeptical if they ever go to a 300 Win Mag as a general issue rifle.

I didn't realize this was ongoing for so long but have always liked the 300 so it caught my eye when I came across the article. Never fired a 338 myself yet but bet I would like that as well but I don't want to get a taste for a round that cost that much.

Do you mind if I PM you to get some tips on one of my SKS's shooting too high? I know you know your stuff so it would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Brent

I love article like that. Especially when I'm at the Service Condition matches toting my M14 along side those C7s and Suped-up ARs. Yeah, you can shoot it faster at the Rapids by in reality it's worth nil when really doing serious damage at 500 meters. Aw, you missed because the wind change last second.

Dimitri,
the article I read was aimed at having enough NRG to go through car glass at a distance and be light enough to carry so I totally agree with your statement. I think it was geared to a specific situation that would enable roadside checkpoints to be better secured to prevent IED's from getting so close to the troops.

Thanks for your input and I wasn't trying to argue your points in any way. You have probably forgotten more than I know about this stuff but the net isn't always the best means of communication as far as making things clear intention wise.
