Marlin 1895GBL 45-70 in stock at Epps

I bought one of the GBL's from Elwood Epps.

Mine has the extra dovetail in the barrel. Remington decided to 'cheap out' with Cdns and give us ALL the GG (short mag) barrels. It is under the barrel and I have an ongoing dispute with Remington over this. The best Remington could do is offer a refund as they know someone will take it if I don't.

Personally, I waited months for this gun and although disappointed I'm going to keep it.
It is cool to look at, shoots well, and seems good for its intended purpose. I'll just buy a filler blank for $5 to stick in the dovetail and forget about it. I won't buy another Remington product again, though.

***Let me take a second to say that Epps has been very accomodating and I don't hold them resposible at all. Marlington are the dicks in this issue, and many on the Marlin Owners Group site predict the demise of this historic firearm....and I agree.

As I 'pre-bought' the GBL I looked it over before leaving the store. The forestock was blonde, and the buttstock was a red colour.....VERY unacceptable....so I tried a few before I left the store. Smoothness of the action varied on all three that I tried, so I took the tight one, ...it'll loosen up with a bit of work. Other than the dovetail mine is perfect.

You can see an in-depth discussion of this and a photo of the problem on the MOG site under the RANT section.

Give me an example of a use for the extra dovetail? Surefire maybe?? LOL

Get off it buddy.

Its ugly...and only there to save remlin some pennies...its also a clear cut sign to me that they don't plan to continue production of this line up...just use up what inventory they have then shut her down

Maybe you are ok with buying half assed remington junk but the majority are in fact NOT.

Good...that'll leave one more available for someone who appreciates it. Seriously...are your tender sensibilities so offended by this unused dovetail? How about the holes D&T'd on the receiver for aftermarket aperture sights? Maybe they should make a separate run of receivers without the holes so that nobody will get into a snit about them in case they aren't planning on using them.

Don't remove the buttstock...you may not like the quality of the finish on the inside of the the through-bolt hold.

You really should of waited til next spring for a SBL...
They are alot nicer!!:D:D:nest::nest:

That is gorgeous!

Oh great, after watching True Grit I am SO tempted to buy one, it would feel awkward sitting in my safe beside a bunch of black rifles, and tacticool shotguns...meh more reason to buy another one to give it company :p

Got my GBL from Epps today, serial no starting with 91, and no extra dovetail cut. The barrel says The Marlin Firearms Co. North Haven CT. on it but has the REP stamp too. It looks great and I won't be parting with mine anytime soon.

It must be flip a coin day with the GBL's. The one I got and returned has the extra dovetail and would not feed. Load up the mag then try to cylce get a double feed and jammed. REP stamped barrel.

Thank god I got my 336BL and 444XLR before Marlin when to s***. I can't believe how bad the rifles have become in such little time. I can see the value of JP stamped Marlins getting very high. Remington has taking a great company/rifle and turned it into a piece of junk. I feel so sorry for those that have had to endure these problems.

well a local shop here just got in a GBL and it does not have the infamous extra dovetail!

my first one is going back to epps on monday and im picking up the good one on saturday. Ill make sure it feeds and give a real good once over before i leave with it.

I guess a few good ones got through!

So sad what is happening to the Marlin name.

Remember to look for the JM stamp on the barrel, just before it meets the receiver, and make sure it looks clean n crisp same as the serial number marking.
Reports are suggesting that remington never had the headstamp when they first made the transition to NY, thus marking them with less then adequate tools:(
Remington has since moved on to use the REP stamp apparently.

I just put a bushnell reddot on my GBL an it looks sharp! It's a 91######xx. I love it it shoots like a dream! Only problem is the stock the butt's a reddish color and the forearm is lighter. Does boyd's make a stock for the GBL?

Definitely a flip of the coin. I was in at Epps today and out of curiosity looked at an 1895GBL and 1895GS. They both had the REP proof mark and were recent Remington/Marlin manufacture. The interesting thing was that the GBL I looked at didn't have the infamous extra dovetail.

I liked the stainless GS better as far as fit and finish and the way the action worked. But I preferred the pistol grip on the GBL over the straight grip on the GS. Just fit me better than my two straight stocked Marlins (both JM proof marked with actions like silk). The checkering on both guns was superior to a Remington made Guide Gun I looked at earlier. My biggest complaint was how stiff the action was on the GBL and the refusal of the lever to close properly unless it was forced closed with a determined effort. Something wrong there.

After what I saw today I think I will join the hundreds lined up to get one of the new SBLs once Marlin/Remington, or Remlin starts producing them again. But I am not going to put my money down until I have one of the new guns in hand and I give it a thorough inspection. And even then I won't feel comfortable until I get it to the range. A sad commentary when I have to say that about a brand that has had such a good reputation in the past.
