Okay you Marlin Lovers and/or experts:

I've got a Marlin 336 in .30-30. I like this caliber, lots of bullet choices, life is good. I have owned a Guide Gun in .45-70 and I love the look of THAT Guide Gun.

How much effort (and cost) can you predict or envision to shorten the barrel of the .30-30 336 to an 18.5" ?

Then I would dearly love to replace the magazine tube (or shorten it, might be expensive here) so that in the end, I've got that half magazine look of the Guide Gun, but now it's a .30-30 that I also love. Best of both worlds?? :D

And then I'm hoping to parkerize it, yeah, I know... I'm a mirror kommando from the Service Rifle game. :)

This is what I want my Marlin to look like... Taken from the Wild West Guns Gallery. They inspire me.

Have a gander:

Gotta love that grey parke'd look. Hey, it's my boomstick, I can customize it my way! My own custom Jungle/Guide Gun in .30-30

So I need advice from the lever gun or Marlin experts. Maybe my expectations are far fetched, but at least I know I can do my own parkerizing in my garage this winter with my 48" parkerizing tank. :D

Thoughts?

Off the top of my head:

-Cut barrel + recrown.
-Dovetail/groove cut underneath barrel for barrel band screw.
-Drill and tap to remount front sights.
-Cut down tube mag.

I think that's it. You can cut down your original tube mag spring to make it work in the shorter tube mag. You might have to mess with the cap on the end of the tube mag, depending on your model and how it is attached.

Did you see the new(ish) Marlin 336 BL in 30-30? It already has the 18 inch barrel and a nice big loop for heavily gloved hand. It is a sweet looking gun and I can only imagine how she would look parkerized.......droool.....

Just shortened a 336 which had been fired with an obstruction in the muzzle, resulting in a cracked barrel and departure of the front sight. Cut, crowned, mounted a front sight ramp, shortened the magazine. You want the magazine shorter. No big deal, but the magazine has to be supported one way or another.

Just another thought: I was thinking last night, and you may not have to mess with the mag tube plug thingy on the barrel end. If you take the length off the receiver-side of the tube mag, then you could leave the plug as-is.

I'm slow sometimes :)

All good suggestions. Might have to save some pennies for the Marlin 336BL, that way, the current 336 I have can remain this way; factory condition.

Thanks for the feedback and advice! :D

Cheers,
Barney

The standard Marlin 30-30 is such a sweet rifle, I'd be really reluctant to mess with it too much!

However, if the trigger is even the slightest bit clunky, particularly with regard to creep, you will not regret the money spent on having a Wild West trigger installed. Break like glass at about 3 lbs, just like premium triggers in a bolt action. Worth every penny.

You cannot do this because the mag tube is not a straight tube near the receiver.

Cut the end off the muzzle size and just a cut a new dovetail. You don't need to shorten the spring.
