Marlin 410 discontinued !

If they wanted a slug gun then step up to a 20 gauge with fully rifled barrel. That would be sweet, or the 12 gauge back, only this time in 3" with again fully rifled barrel.

3 inch makes for too long a lever throw. 2.5 inch leaves it identical to the other marlin big bores. i'm going to use it for deer some day when i'm old. You guys are only cutting it up because you don't have one....HAH!

Hmmm, what a coincidence.I actually logged on specifically this morn looking for comparison info between Marlin and Win 9410. I was on Marlin's website yesterday and couldn't find the 410 at all?Q answered, discontinued.
I like the looks of the Marlin better, but i wish it was available with choke tubes like the 9410.Also the Marlin is $130 less.Kinda leary though 'bout a cyl.choked 2.5" .410,pretty thin pattern I'm guessin?Being discontinued though kinda makes it a little more attractive?I dunno,flip-flop,flip-fop?

I've shot both and have to admit the Winchester points more like a shotgun. The Marlin feels more like a rifle. Both guns pattern great out to 20 yards. Both are a blast on the skeet range. I would still buy the Marlin.

Thanx Marlin. That's the kinda info i'm after.I'm looking for something that is at least semi-useful,fun,and a little different for rabbits and partridge.

I've never had much faith in the .410,esp after seeing many 30yd partridge over the years fly off after a blast of 12ga.Borrowed a buddy's single shot full 410 this afternoon though and killed 3 bunnies from 10-25 yards, and performed an informal pattern on a 1 gallon plastic oil jug.

30 yards/full choke/3" #6 shot/15 hits/7 passed through both sides of jug

Dammit,I still kinda like the Marlin though??Anybody know if it can be tapped for aftermarket full choke?

I don't think many Natural Resources (provincial) allow the .410 for deer hunting. I fear that would make the Marlin even more useless. Still there is no rhym or reason to the collector's market at times. Just my two cents and I would like to shoot one for fun.
cheers Darryl

would you consider a 243 with 110grains at less than 50 yards enough for deer? And just for the record a 410 with slugs is legal in Ont.

If you think a .410 shotgun slug will outshine a .243 at 50 yards (both in accuracy and velocity) you need to read up on ballistics.

Off the top of my head, I would think the .243 with a 90-100 grain bullet would be around 2900-3000 fps at the muzzle. I would venture a guess that your wee little .410 slug would be doing at most 1200 fps.

Do yourself a favour, and keep this little gun for small game. It sure as hell aint adequate for much over the size of a large rabbit... and even then at less than 20 yards.

I stand corrected (I am that much of a man anyways) The reg states any shotgun smaller than 20 bore when loaded with SHOT is prohibited when hunting deer. That of course makes the .410 ball (slug) load a legal option. I still cannot see the comparison between the .410 slug and a 100 gr loaded 243. Having alot of experience with the .410 in both slug and shot loads I don't consider it a viable deer load. Yes it will kill deer but so will a .22 short if all is well. I will not get into the moral vs legal obligations of sportsmen in the hunting sport. The reg mentioned is related to Ontario of course. Sorry for making a post without thoroughly researching it before hand.

cheers Darryl

It's like the buckshot myth. Yes it CAN be used to kill deer, and yes, it probably has killed deer.

But I feel pretty confident in saying that it has wounded at least 10 times as many deer than it has killed. Buckshot is simply not suitable for big game, even though it is perfectly legal. Just because something is legal does not mean it should be used.

I'm pretty confident in a .410 bringing down a deer effectively. The recommended use is deer, says so on the box:

"Designed for maximum effectiveness on light, thin-skinned game such as white-tail deer"

I'll take Federal's word for it. ;)
BTW a 2.5" hollow point slug goes at 1800 fps and is close to 90 gr.
