Hi, I’m getting my first .22 semi-automatic… I did some research and it seems to be that Ruger 10/22 and Marlin 795 are good choices …I went to the stores and take a look at them… now it’s a problem here….don’t know what to choose Ruger or Marlin

Marlin 795
Pros: price, durable synthetic stock, last shot-bolt hold open, swivels can be attached (pardon my French) small size (good to carry all day long in a “back country”)

Cons, no aftermarket parts, scope mount, toy like inexpensive look and no high cap mags are available

Ruger 10/22 Standard
Pros: price ($50 more then marlin) tons of aftermarket parts are available, good looking wooden stock , heavy, feels good in the hands, taped for scope mounting, hidden rotary mag.

Cons: barel band, no last shot-bolt open, wooden stock not as durable as synthetics, no swivels, difficult to get mag out,

What I need the rife for:

Informal shooting, casual plinking, caring in the “back country” just in case of emergency to hung on small game, (cottage in the very deep woods and I mean it) I’m NOT planning to do “heavy upgrades” to it, I might get a scope and high cap mag, that is it.

I can get Marlin for $173 and Ruger (standard) for $219. I think this is ok price, any suggestions? (No mailing options are considered)

So if you have any experience with these 2 rifles, please share with me, Thank you, all.

For autoloading .22 rifles, I've always been more partial to the Marlin 60 personally. I don't know if you've considered a tube magazine but it holds 14 shots and the new ones hold the action open after last shot.

The 10/22 is a POS out of the box IMO. (flame retardant suit on) :nest:

I recall from reading in another thread that you just got your PAL. Are you certain that you wouldn't be better served with a bolt action .22? Most semis have feeding issues at one time or another. The Marlin and Savage bolt actions (esp the Savage with accutrigger) are a great value. Next step up is a CZ452 ($500).

A friend of mine has a Marlin and I have a Ruger. We hunt gophers all the time and his jams alot while the ruger shoots fine. My Ruger is also about 5years older. Also you want to use higher velocity rounds with the semi-autos, they seem to kick the spent shells out better.

Thanks for reply, I'm interested only in semi-auto so far and I'm not considering tube mags. 10/22 deluxe is $325 as I know and it's a bit too much for me, I did consider this at the beginning. :) but now I really don't want to spend much on small bore gun. What about the price for Marlin 795… $ 173 is it ok? I know that for Ruger 10/22 $219 is not bad.

I've got a 10/22, tweaked up the way I like it.

The single best thing I did was a Hornet products trigger group. $95 US for a drop-in complete replacement. It's got an extended mag release, auto bolt release and the trigger is far lighter and smoother than the factory trigger...which I hated.

I don't own a 597, so I can't compare them.

Everyone is talking about modifying rugers, it’s definitely good to have that as an option, but which gun is better out of the box?

I have the 795.......great .22LR. I recommend it everyone. The price is great.....I've had it two gopher seasons with no problems. When the rifle needs to be cleaned, the last shot hold open starts to fail on me. It's very light, easy to carry all day. As price is something to keep in mind, I would assume that you would put something like a Bushnell 3-9X32mm rimfire scope on it......which will mount to the dovetail cut into the receiver.

Nope, you can't go wrong with the 795, cost effective, great shooter out of the box, no mods necessary. Now if you want to give you rifle to a no talent rapper and have it "pimped out", go with a 10/22. No disrespect to 10/22 modders, mild to wild......just not my cup of tea.

You've handled both and you don't know which one to buy?

As soon as I picked up a Marlin I knew it wasn't the rifle for me. I bought the Ruger K10/22T. It's a great rifle and is very accurate with the right ammo.

Good luck on your decision. It's a personal choice no one can tell you which one to buy. You'll know when you pick one up and handle it.

Well, I have mixed feelings on both of them, honestly speaking. I did like the Ruger a bit more.

The Ruger 10/22 CRR Compact rifle has no barrel band, has a compact 16.75" barrel (still non-restricted of course), and fiber optic sights. If you spend a few bucks to drop in a Volquartsen extractor and extended mag release, you'll have a great compact semi-auto rimfire rifle that will fire and extract any cheapo ammo that you put in it.
