Hey guys~feeling a "cheer-myself-up" gun purchase coming on :) and the one I've been talking myself out of for some time is the Marlin 795. This gun will probably live most of it's life as a plinker (not hunter) and I'd FAR prefer to be running subsonic ammo. through it. Have any of you modified your rifles to be able to cycle subsonic ammo? I've read somewhere (can't find where) that you can cut a coil or two off of one (2?) of the springs inside and it will reliably cycle subsonic. Have any of you done it? How does it feed now?

Ideally, if that's possible, I'd like to be able to run both down the road so would you suggest getting a replacement (original length) spring(s)...or will everything cycle well once the mod is done?

Thanks for taking a moment to respond.

Sub-sonic ammunition works well. If you are meaning CB's then it will not cycle the action. Ordinary sub-sonic .22's work just fine.

No, CB is not what I'm interested in shooing~no semi on earth would probably function with that stuff! (feed it to my Norinco bolt-action, have about 250 on hand at any given time :) ) It's subsonic ammo. (less power/report) I'm interested in shooting. I used to feed my Ruger 10/22 the stuff, Federal Gold Medal Target for instance. 40 gr. bullet, 1080 fps. Cycled it just fine.

Hope to hear from other 795 owners, as I thought they had issues with any ammo that wasn't full-power....?

I'm not sure about a Marlin 795, but a Ruger 10-22 handles Rem Sub-Sonics with no problems, even when the rifle is very dirty. Also, I've fired CB longs and shorts through a 10-22, but worked the action by hand with the ammo in the magazine, (shorts needing extra care). I would guess the Marlin 795 would do the same, but I have never tried it.

Why did I bring-up the 10/22... f:P:

It's the 795 I'm concerned about, as I'm interested in (maybe) adding a semi to the collection. Like the weight/cost/reputation for accuracy the 795 has.

Well, go buy one and find out.

Forum=discussion. Without discussion, there is no need for a forum. Thought I might be able to save myself some grief and ask the question before I buy the rifle scanner. I prefer to use subsonics where I shoot, due to the close proximity of other farms. With the number of 795s out there, I figured someone could tell me whether or not a subsonic round will cycle the action. Guess that person isn't you. :)

I've got a 795ss but never tried subsonics in it. tell ya what. You tell me what brand(s) of subsonics you wanna try and assuming Wholesale sports has it i'll grab some and go out to the range and try it out! wost case scenario it doen's cycle and it becomes a straight pull. I know my 795 likes heavier (40gr) bullets the best. the cheapo winchester 333 pack 36gr causes alot of grief.

That would be awesome, very much appreciated. Not sure what the 795s shoot accurately, but I have allot of Federal Gold Medal Target on hand. (not expensive stuff) 40 gr. bullet, 1080 fps velocity. Wouldn't need to be that stuff, but anything comparable. (under about 1,100 fps) If they don't have the Federal, simply let me know what the gun shot well for you.

Thanks again!

I may be crazy but i think i was shooting some of that federal out of it last weekend! And it worked great. I may be wrong though i'll have to scrounge up teh box and make sure... I just randomly try different ammo in it, but don't really pay attention to the velocity, just the grain.... I'lll get back to you on it!

nope sorry i was wrong it was federal HV match 40gr at 1200 fps... I'll pick some subsonic stuff up, but i won't be able to try it until the weekend for ya. Damn I suppose I have to go to the range, poor me lol.

Thanks ndb86~look forward to hearing how you make-out.

Yup worked just fine. Put 100 rounds of remington subsonic @1050fps though her and it ran without a problem. shot lower than what i had it sighted in for at 50 yards though. About half an inch. I'll post a pic of the target once i get around to taking one if you're interested.

I can back up those results, my 60 with the same action shoots CCI subsonics and CCI standard velocity no problem, infact it shoots them very accurately and reliably. Super action on these guns.
