Marlin Guide 18.5" vs Marlin 22" Barrel velocity

I've shot over a dozen bears ( not as many as Ted) but only 2 were grizzlies. The least impressive kill was a 45-70 using cast bullets.

Yup me neither I have no actual first hand experience with a 45-70. I know a friend that has and he only shot a few target with it but that's about it. I'm sure it's a good calibre but it's probably over-hyped.

To be honest, I was interested in the caliber until I took the time to do a little research...... As a novice reloader, I thought it would be a neat cartridge to add life to with modern powders and experiment with...... Was actually thinking of getting one in a Ruger #1...... After researching "best loads"etc, I was very unimpressed....... Add the lack of energy with the fact that it has the trajectory of a landing Zeppelin and it's not hard to see why......

Now I want to listen to some Led Zepplin.

I have my Marlin GBL 4570 4 bear defense and I'll trust that more than a 12 gauge shotgun. I have my 400 grain Barnes Buster's going at over 1900 Fps. I have tested it in the blocks of wood for penetration against a 12 gauge slug multiple 12 gauge slug and the 400 grain Barnes Buster penetrated twice as far. Is it a great hunting round probably not. But I have it for for certain circumstances. Like if I have an animal down in Grizzly country. I'd rather have my 45-70 than my 338 with a charging grizzly.

Yah.....thanks a lot........for ruining it for me. Now i am rethinking getting one.... again....thanks for nothing

You'd be quite misguided unless you pick the Marlin for ease of handling and sight considerations. Your .338 is a far more effective rifle, and will do much better on a grizzly- or anything else. 1900fps is just too damn slow and people get hung up on penetration, but that's not what you need, there's a lot more to terminal ballistics.

Years ago, when visiting here, at 3pm, late June, there was a good size Black Bear(400ish) walking down the sidewalk right downtown. We also have a lot of town Blacktails that have discovered that Strawberries in someones garden and no Cougars is a good thing.

Would have to go up one of the local inlets to find a Grizzly, but my thought is a Marlin 1895 guide would be just the right medicine for this country. Odds of a Elk draw about the same as Lotto 649, little blacktails at bayonet distance, Blackbears in the walnut tree or trying to take a blacktail away. Good power at close distance, eat right to the bullet hole, and non cross country trajectory in a country with a fair number of people and very few shots over 100 yards.

Probably going to sell my 45-70//30-06 quick change Handi rifle, to do away with some redundancy. But i have a Late 80's/early 90's guide with porting inbound. Probably be my Truck gun.

You are notorious for your proficiency with lead here........ And you are in Ontario like me, where a .45-70 will fulfill most, if not all of your needs...... Go for it....... I bet you will enjoy it.......

Shock damage makes scene to me for a protection round. Big and fast being the best. As there is no chance of me making a brain or spine shot under stress or close range off the hip ex. I think a 45-70 would pencil a hole though and give results although faster but much like an arrow. Where as a bullet with speed even if it misses the vitals the shock may blow the heart or nervous system as it passes. That being said I still love my 444 and will continue to use it until I just come to my senses and replace it with a 30-30.

Great thread non the less

The killing mechanism between a bow and a rifle are very different........

The whitetails I harvested via bow never knew they were dead until they ran out of oxygen and collapsed....... I even had one I shot grazing go back to grazing to the point that I thought I had missed until it suddenly went legs up.....

As for rifle whitetails, a lost one happened maybe once in 20 with.... But all but died within 20 yards..... And the one that did not was my fault....

Of course the 338 win mag would penetrate more. Butt if I have an animal down and at the last minute a Grizzly is charging it will be a lot easier to shoot the thing with my 45-70 than with my scoped 338. The lot easier to line up the grizzly with my XS ghost ring sights then through my scope. I did I did not buy the 4570 for hunting. I also bought it because it's so much fun to shoot

It would be even easier with an unscoped Ruger guide gun in 338......

Maybe so, but I can load an fire my 4570 faster than you can your bolt I would imagine, and I can't short throw my lever.
And if a bear take 5 rounds of 458 bullets to his body and still reaches me, I hope he enjoys his lunch because he has most certainly earned it.
Now i really want to shoot an animal with mine, just so I can see what all this mediocre performance stuff is all about. I don't expect a bang flop, but I don't expect that from my 7 mag, 375h&h or 38-55 either.just a dead critter.
