Marlin Lever - Cross Bolt Safety?

I darn neat shot my toes off because my winchester did not have a safety.
This was a long time ago. NOW I NEVER HAVE A LOADED ROUD IN THE CHAMBER UNTIL I'M READY TO SHOOT. MY GOOD FREIND GOT SHOT IN THE BACK WITH HIS 30-30, AS IT SLID IN THE CANOE. HE IS VERY LUCKY THAT HE IS NOT DEAD. HIS RIFLE DID NOT HAVE A SAFETY??

see...right there....guns are dangerous
in the wrong hands

I do wonder how many guys have heard a CLICK instead of a BANG when the cross bolt is either forgotten on OR accidentally engaged... I bet there are a fair number of deer/moose/bears that have the cross bolt safety to thank for saving their skin in those situations lol!

Me f:P:

At least one extra deer on St . Joseph Island because of this from a few years ago on my Marlin 444.

Again in 2022 on a buck, but I managed to recock it and push it off, and he resided in my freezer afterwards

I have 7 JM Marlin Cowboy models. One of them has a safety delete and the other 6 have safeties. All guns are perfectly reliable and while I don't claim to be the smartest or most dexterous person, I have never accidentally engaged the safety or had it get in the way.

I also have 2 Miroku Winchester 1892's and have put hundreds of .44 mag through them with nary a hitch. My girlfriend shot it, though, and it went "click" and I thought "Hmm, was that a light strike?" Nope, she just gripped it in a way that the tang safety slid back. I've never had that issue. With the Winchesters though, it does make the action heavier since the springs for the rebounding hammer are heavier. But I've never noticed it when actually firing it, only when cycling it at home. The Rossi models seem to be able to be tuned to be lighter.

I put the safety delete with the saddle ring on my 45-70
I like it much better now :)
Did that to a 30-30 and a .444.
On a episode of north woods law one of the game wardens missed a moose because he forgot the cross bolt.

The cross bolt is completely unnecessary seeing as how the rifle already has a half #### safety.

^^^^^I can tell you that this has happened more than once at our hunt camp. Probably more than I know of because some guys didn't want to say they messed up LOL. I usually carry a few in a small ziplock bag now in case someone needs one.

I hate them because they are the answer to the question that nobody asked. Grew up with traditional levers and was taught how to handle them safely and exercised muzzle control at all times.
Being an old fossil seeing an exposed hammer gun with the hammer at full #### reminds me of a cat with its ears laid back. Screams caution. Wouldn't rely on crossbolt with rifle at full ####, too easy to get pushed off in rough country.

I'm in the camp on that. Any lever rifle I've owned has been of original layout or with deleted, add on safety crap. I be in me "lizard hood" yrs as well.
