These are fantastic guns, I would love one but they are pretty rare. I'm pretty sure all of them were made back in the pre-Remington days and are all stamped JM. I made a similar post to yours a few years ago and someone offered me one for around $1500. The 16" barrel gives up a bit more than the 18" gun I have, but they look pretty handy. Post pics if you get one!

Dangit, I just bought a GBL 18.5" guide gun. Now I'm gonna have to get a couple inches lopped off it. This is gonna cost me a bit to have to send it out. I was perfectly happy with the gun until I saw this thread. Now things have changed. 16" looks like the cat's meow.

You can't get "a couple inches lopped off". The only way to get a 16" barrel is to buy a new gun with one already installed, or to have the barrel replaced with one that is manufactured at 16". If you have a barrel cut below 18" you will have made a prohibited weapon

Goofy unit for a 45/70... I could see a 16" model in a .44 Mag... but I don't even like the 18" barrels on the 1895... I prefer the 22" for 45/70, and would love a 24" 1895 rifle.

Just get a Henry Big Boy Carbine. I don't know if they have them in 45-70 but I'm waiting on mine in .44 mag!

No way. Load from the front BS looks 22ish and cheap for a cool centrefire cartridge; the 44 Remington Magnum.

It's also considerably slower then loading through a side gate, which has been an acceptable practice with most real lever guns since 1866 or thereabouts.

Big step backwards.

Actually faster than side loader. Remember you're dropping big rounds down the tube not fiddling around with tiny .22s. Plus unloading is super fast. I have a Marlin 1895 in 45-70, 1893-style mod. 36 in 30-30, and a Winchester 94 in 30-30.....they're all finger-pinching buggers to load!

Not too goofy as far as ballistic losses are concerned when shots on critters are well placed inside of 150 yds. with hardcast 405 gr. or heavier boolits. My past Marlins and one Ruger No.3 had 22" tubes & handled ok, but not near as well as my Pedersoli 86/71 with 22" barrel. The No.3 was an evil kicker in stock form.

A real fun one to work with is the TC Encore or Contender carbine with a 14-16" tube tossing 500 gr. boolits @ 1300 fps. Dandy little blasters that perform well beyond their looks suggest on bigass game at closer ranges.

That said, I would still like a JM stamped Marlin 1896 Cowboy with the 26" barrel to use as an off-hand target
plopper because they hang so well and have a generous sight radius when used with iron sights.:)

My bad, I was talking the sdt, not stp.
There were 501 sdt's they had a straight grip stock (black/grey laminate) a 16.25" barrel and fiber optic sights. I don't care for pistol grips on Marlins.

I'm sort of the other way, especially with those chambered in 45-70. With the top end loads the Marlins are capable of handling and especially when using the heavier bullets. I sometimes found the straight stock design of my Marlin 1895GS a little hard on the fingers. When my Son expressed a 'must have' interest, I gave it to him, and

Replaced it with a Marlin 1895GBL, and ;) a 'short friend' to keep it company :d :d .

I definitely prefer the pistol grip configuration, plus, the GBL is a little shorter :) .
