Am looking at a marlin 38/357, fired less than a box of ammo. Straight grip stock and rates a 9.9 outta 10, what would be a fair price to pay?
i know nothing about lever actions but the gun sounds like a fun plinker

Where do I look for that bullseye? Guessing that's PreRem?
Clint

On the bottom of thebutt stock.
You're right, a symbol starting, what, hundred plus yeas ago? and running until Rem time.
One of those in good condition would be a much better rifle than a new one.

Your bullseye comments got me to thinking so I had to go check. Both my 1895GS and my 444S have it.

My stocks been refinished I think

And what about the JM inside a circle on the barrel?

Thanks

The "bullseye check" doesn't work. I have a 336W that is pre Remington and it has no bullseye. The only sure way to tell, is if it has the "JM" stamp on the left side of the barrel near the receiver(like the above poicture). If so, it's pre Remington or at least the parts were made by Marlin. There are a few out there with the JM stamp that were sold after Remington's takeover, but still assembled by Marlin. If there's a "REP" on the barrel on the right side just infront of the ejection port, it's assembled and made by Remington.........avoid.

you dont need to avoid them like ^^^^^ says they are alot better now then when remington took over. Just inspect any remlins before you buy them theres a ton of info on the subject at marlin forums any made in 2012 have been reported to be fine. I bought a 2012 remlin guide gun and cant find a thing wrong with it and there a blast to shoot.

Perhaps they should've stamped them "RIP";). I checked the two I posted about earlier, both have the "JM" as well as the bullseye. My other Marlin, an old family heirloom, model 94 in 44-40 has none of the three IDs mentioned but has had a lot of use and many memories. And, a couple of shots of the 'Old Girl':).

Nice. I think the bottom one is the first pic I've seen from you that doesn't have that moose medallion, you're slipping. :D

My 444P also has the JM and bullseye. I think all pre Rem Marlins with walnut had the bullseye, only the cheapo birch stocks like on my 336W didn't.

Just a little perhaps but with the Moose horns ;)and the two stuffed Moose my Granddaughters snuggle with, I thought I had the 'Moose aspect' covered:p.

Some people used to think the bullseye was just the marker and a place to drill out for a sling swivel. Thus, a lot of bullseyes disapeared.
Johnn, is there any chance that's what happened with your 44-40?
Bruce
